Sandra Hammond Obituary

Exodus 19:4

I carried you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself.

—-------------------------------

Sandy Hammond of Caledonia, MI went to be with Jesus on March 23, 2023, after 83 years of eager anticipation.

Sandy was born at home in Grand Rapids, MI to Louis and Imogene Kienstra on May 15, 1939. Highlights of her childhood were weekends spent at the cottage, riding her horse, and other “tomboy” activities. Her first job was working at a soda fountain as a “soda jerk” in high school. Sandy graduated from Creston High School in 1957. During her high school years she began attending church with a friend and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.

Sandy married young and had her four children by the time she was 29. As a young wife and mother, she was instrumental in planting Kentwood Christian Church. She retained those dear friends the rest of her life and was blessed by their cards, flowers, and visits during her illness.

Sandy worked as a billing clerk at Hope Network after her children were adults and until she retired. But Sandy’s true gift was fulfilling her calling to raise her children with the love, patience, and gentle spirit of Jesus. Her children were her greatest joy, and she was theirs.

Sandy will be dearly missed by her sister, Lynn Bright; Children Deb and Ric Grasman, Mike Hammond, Cindy Hammond, and Steve Hammond; Grandchildren Danny Parker, Tara Grasman, Vince (Paige) Porritt, Ryan and Erica Wabich, Emily Wabich, Megan and Conner Hicks; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Imogene Kienstra; Son-in-Law, David Parker; and Daughter-in-Law, Diane Hammond.

A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 1pm in the Chapel at Calvary Church, 707 East Beltline NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49501, Entrance “C”. A dessert fellowship will directly follow the service.

If you feel led to make a donation in lieu of flowers, they can be made to Calvary Church Benevolence Fund at calvarygr.org, or to Faith Hospice at faith hospicecare.org.
