Luz Romero Amaya Obituary

On March 3rd, 2024, Luz Marina Romero Amaya, age 74, passed away peacefully at home in Grand Rapids, Michigan surrounded by her family.  She was born in Cabimas, Venezuela on January 1st, 1950, and moved to Grand Rapids in 2019.

Marina was a dedicated mother and daughter that gave her unconditional love to those around her. She will be deeply missed for her heart-filled laughter, big smile and love for adventure. Marina would welcome everyone at her home with love and kindness and she was a living example of service and integrity. In her most recent years, she will be remembered for being the “abuela alcahueta” (or spoiling grandma).

She was educated at “Hermagoras Chavez” High School in Cabimas and attended University of Zulia in Maracaibo where she graduated with a degree in Bioanalysis. She worked at Social Security Hospital Laboratories and the Venezuelan Institute of Social Assistance for the Department of Education in Maracaibo for over 25 years where she made lifelong friends.

Marina was preceded in death by her father David Romero. She is survived by her mother Yolanda Romero; three daughters, Vivian (Michael) Romero Dean, Maria Virginia (Alejandro) Romero Lisboa and Joanna Romero; three grandchildren, Valentina Lisboa Romero, Diego and Vivian Dean. She is also survived by her sister Ixora Romero de Montiel, brothers David, Nerio and Carlos Romero; brother-in-law Hector Montiel and sisters-in-law, Rosmary, Lisbeth and Lizbeth; and many nieces and nephews. All of these she loved and touched deeply.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Gregory Gressel and the team of angels at Corewell Health Gynecology Oncology-Lemmen Holton and Butterworth Hospital, and the Hospice Care team at Corewell Health for their exceptional care and support during her journey.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Church, 6477 Ada Drive, Ada, MI, 49301, on Friday March 15, 2024, at 11 am with visitation prior to mass at 10 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA) or the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MIOCA).

El 3 de marzo del 2024, Luz Marina Romero Amaya, 74 años, falleció en la paz de su hogar en Grand Rapids, Michigan rodeada de su familia. Nació en Cabimas, Venezuela el 1ro de Enero de 1950. Se mudó a Grand Rapids en el 2019 para estar cerca de sus hijas y nietos.

Marina fue una dedicada madre e hija que entregó su amor incondicional a los que la rodeaban.  Ella será profundamente extrañada por su risa alegre, su gran sonrisa y su amor por la aventura. Marina siempre le daba una cariñosa y amable bienvenida a quien viniera a visitarla y vivió una vida de servicio e integridad. Recientemente será recordada por ser la abuelita alcahueta.

Ella recibió su educación en Cabima, en el Liceo “Chávez” y atendió la Universidad del Zulia en Maracaibo donde se graduó de Bioanalista. Marina trabajo por más de 25 años para los laboratorios del Seguro Social (IVSS) y para el laboratorio del Instituto de Previsión para la Asistencia Social del Ministerio de Educación (IPASME). Allí hizo muy buenos amigos para toda la vida por quienes será recordada.

Su madre Yolanda Romero; sus hijas Vivian, María Virginia y Joanna; sus hijos Michael Dean, Alejandro Lisboa; sus nietos Valentina, Diego y Vivian. Su hermana Ixora Romero de Montiel, hermanos David, Nerio y Carlos Romero; su cuñado Héctor Montiel y cunadas, Rosemary, Lisbeth y Lizbeth; y sus sobrinos a quienes ella amo profundamente se unen al duelo de su partida y piden una oración por su alma. 

Una misa en su memoria se llevará a cabo en la Iglesia Católica de “St. Robert of Newminster”, 6477 Ada Drive, Ada, MI, 49301,  el 15 de Marzo del 2024 a las 11 AM. Visita a sus cenizas ocurrirá antes de la misa a las 10 AM.

Misas en la ciudad de Maracaibo se están llevando a cabo en las Iglesias de San Ramon Nonato y San Onofre a las 5 pm; Padre Claret y San Juan Bosco a las 6 pm.

En lugar de flores,  donaciones a las diferentes Asociaciones para el Cáncer de Ovario [Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA) o Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MIOCA)] serían apreciadas.
