Ernest Sikor Obituary

Ernest Theodore Sikor, affectionately known as Ernie to his friends and loved ones, embarked on his final journey on February 4, 2024, at the age of 98. He was born on December 30, 1925, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to his Ukrainian, Canadian parents. Ernie's last years took him to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and service.

During his 11th year of high school, Ernie voluntarily enlisted in World War II, serving as a Machinist’s Mate in the US Navy. His bravery aboard the USS Harding earned him a Bronze Star for saving many lives on his ship.

Following his military service, Ernie finished high school with honors and channeled his meticulous skills into a lifelong career as a barber. He took great pride in owning Harry’s Custom Barbering in Detroit and working at Cranbrook Barber Shop in Birmingham, Michigan.

Ernie's heart was as full as his life, married to his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Sikor, for 58 years. Together, they nurtured a family that grew to include their three children: Jan Johnston, Karen Hildebrandt, and Mark Sikor. He had 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Ernie’s role as a family man was one of his greatest sources of pride and joy. The later years were sweetened by the companionship of Flo Goss, with whom he shared a loving bond for 10 years.

He loved camping with his RV and visited many states. Ernie was a “snowbird” and spent 10 years in New Port Richey, Florida. His travels across Europe, South America, and China were not mere trips but chapters in a richly lived story.

People knew Ernie as a loving, caring, curious and friendly man whose laughter and presence were a comfort to others. He was a devoted Methodist who volunteered many hours to those in need.

As a resident of the Clark Retirement Home Franklin Campus for 4 1/2 years, Ernie's warmth and enthusiasm made him a cherished member of his community.

Let us honor Ernest Theodore Sikor by living as he did, with a heart ready for adventure and a soul eager to embrace the world. In his own way, Ernie taught us that life's beauty is in its experiences and that love and friendship are the most profound adventures of all.
