Betty Peterson

April 12, 1944 ~ August 27, 2023 (age 79) 79 Years Old

Obituary

Betty Lane Peterson, 79, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away unexpectedly on August 27, 2023 while on vacation with her family in Michigan.

Betty was born on April 12, 1944 to Thessa and Frank Gordon Sr. in Walker County, Alabama. After graduating high school, Betty went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and became a teacher.

A few years later, Betty met the love of her life, Walt, at a chance meeting at a Florida yacht club. When Walt traveled back home to Chicago, he was so smitten with Betty that he would send her letters with a mini pencil enclosed to prompt her to write him back. Of course, she found the gesture amusing and the rest, as they say, is history. Betty and Walt had just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary prior to her passing. Their marriage was filled with laughter and love.

Throughout her 79 years, Betty had many passions. Career-wise, she was a wonderful teacher and later, a successful real estate agent. In her community, she was devoted to her church and a leader in P.E.O., an organization that promotes educational opportunities for women. With her friends and family, she loved to play cards and travel. And in her kitchen, Betty was an incredible cook who could take the simplest ingredients and turn them into a masterpiece. But Betty’s biggest passion in life was the wonderful home and family that she created with Walt. She felt that her greatest gifts were her two sons and their families. Her three grandchildren lovingly called her Mimi.

Betty is survived by her husband Walt Peterson; her children Chris Peterson (Noelle) and Greg Peterson (Michele); grandchildren Jackson, Max, and Emerson Peterson; brother Frank Gordon Jr. (Pat); and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will miss her dearly. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thessa and Frank Gordon Sr.; sisters Billie Boyd and Melba Curtin; and niece Kathy England.

A memorial service will be held in the future to celebrate Betty’s life. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation to your favorite charity in Betty’s honor.
