IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Patrick
Hoffman
August 24, 1945 – March 14, 2025
William "Bill" Patrick Hoffman was born August 24, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio to Frank Hoffman and Ruth Beam, the fifth of eight siblings. He died on March 14, 2025, in Portage, MI following declining health due to pulmonary fibrosis. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Toledo in 1963. In 1968, he married Cheryl Marie Hansen, and they had two sons Jonathan William Hoffman and James Peter Hoffman. He enjoyed being involved in his sons' school, church, and sporting events, particularly when they played in a church youth softball league. After his divorce, he was an active member of Parents Without Partners. Bill was known at PWP potlucks for his delicious potato salad, which his sons humorously remember as being bought at the local grocery store and put in a home serving dish. He spent his career working for the United States Postal Service, first as a mail carrier and later in managerial roles. While living in Toledo, Bill was an umpire for youth and adult recreational softball leagues. After retirement from USPS, he was a part-time school bus driver for Sylvania (OH) Schools.
With his sons grown, he moved to Portage, MI. He continued to drive a school bus and participated in many volunteer endeavors. These included home deliveries for Meals on Wheels, ushering at the Miller, Civic, and Chenery auditoria, and driving a bus for outings offered by the Portage Senior Center, where he was also an active member. Bill loved to take his boat out and fish in various lakes in the Portage area. He also enjoyed playing golf several times a week and competing in regional euchre tournaments. Bill looked forward to visits from his grandsons, particularly early morning fishing with Ethan and board games with Ben. He was also an avid sports fan - he attended sporting events in person and watched them from home. Bill was a caring man who helped others regardless of whether they were friends or strangers. He had an amazing ability to make connections and conversation with anyone.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, his siblings Dennis, Michael, Mary, and Peter, half-sister Lucile, and nephew Duane Ralston. Surviving family members are his sons Jon (Matt Orr) Hoffman of Canton, MI and Jim (Julie Potts) Hoffman of Greensboro, NC, his grandsons Ethan and Ben Hoffman of Greensboro, NC, his siblings Leo (Ruth) Hoffman of Sebring FL, Barbara (Jack) Schlea of Cumming, GA, and Rose Marie (Paul) West of Cottonwood, AZ, and his niece Janine Martin of Madison, Alabama.
Consider a memorial donation to the Portage Zhang Senior Center, where Bill found a cherished community of friends. The family will have a memorial service for family and friends later this spring.
