May 23, 2014 CLAXTON, WENDELL Lloyd Wendell Lloyd Claxton, 85, of Comstock Park and Sparta, died Friday, May 23, 2014 at Meadowlark Retirement Home in Sparta. He was born March 26, 1929 in Lennon, MI to Corwin and Alice Mae (Lare) Claxton on the family farm and had lived in the Sparta area for over sixty years. Wendy retired from Spartan Distributors after many years of traveling the roads of Michigan as a sales rep for several companies. When his children were young, he was active in North Kent Junior Baseball League, Lions Club, Boy Scouts and Sparta High School athletic boosters. He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Barbara Jean (Wetherbee), three sons and two daughters, Brian Claxton of Denver, Co; Roxanne Claxton of Byron Center; Greg (Pam) Claxton of Kentwood; Dan (Mary) Claxton of Walker; and Angela (Steve) Shamery of Hudsonville; 14 grandchildren: Douglas and Arne Claxton, David (Amie) Brock, Shelley Brock (Will Hovarter), Samantha (Dave) Hodge, Kendra, Kevin (Megan), Corey Claxton, Jordyn and Mitchell Burgess, Beth Clay and Taylor, Travis and Spencer Shamery; eight great-grandchildren, Kendall, Olivia and Colin Brock, Braeden, Graham and Lila Hodge, Harlow Hovarter, and Brooke Clay; one brother, Harold Claxton of Kansas and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. The family would like to thank all those at Lacks Cancer Center, Faith Hospice and Meadowlark for their great care of dad over the last few months of his life. Cremation has taken place at Simply Cremation under the direction of Ofield Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will take place on June 1, 2014 from 3PM to 4PM at the Knowlton & McFall Reception Room, 9654 Sparta Ave., Sparta, MI followed by a luncheon open house. In lieu of flowers the family has asked donations be made to Faith Hospice, 2100 Raybrook St. SE, Ste 300, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 -
