Virginia McCarron (Newman), 85, of Petoskey, Michigan, passed away October 5th, 2018. She was born on February 3, 1933 in Janesville, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Chadwick and Ethel (Connell) Newman. Virginia grew up in Janesville, Wisconsin and spent many happy days at her grandparents farm, where her love for animals, especially horses, cats and dogs, originated. Virginia and her family moved to East Lansing, Michigan when she was 13 years old. She graduated from St. Mary's Cathedral High School in 1951 and went on to graduate from Michigan State College in 1955. In 1956 she married Felix (Phil) McCarron and raised six children. A dedicated wife and mother, Virginia is survived by her daughter Virginia and grandchildren, Wayne and Connell; daughter Theresa and son-in-law Earl; son James and daughter-in-law, Cheryl and grandchildren, Dan, Lynda and Parker; daughter Mary and son-in-law Paul, and grandchildren, Katie, Jack, Dominic, and Ben; son Joseph; and son Kelly and daughter-in-law, Lisa and grandchildren Alexis, Chadwick and Michael, as well as 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Felix McCarron and brother Chad Newman. Virginia was a creative genius. She handmade bears, quilts, clothing and crafts. She was an entrepreneur, owning her own store for several years, the Thimbleberry Shop in East Lansing, and then later traveled to art and craft shows with her husband, Phil, selling her creations. She entered many of her projects in fairs where she often won first prize for her work. She also spent several years working at Michigan State University in the Department of Public Safety, as well as for the MSU Broadcasting Services department at WKAR Public Media. We are thankful to the staff at Meadowlark Assisted Living in Sparta, Michigan, who cared for Virginia, laughing at her antics and providing comfort to her during the last year of her life. A Memorial Mass service will take place at 10:30 a.m., Friday. November 9, 2018 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Parish, 513 Howard St. Petoskey, Michigan. Father Denny Stilwell will officiate.
