Obituary

The world lost one of its sweetest, most gentle souls on April 6, 2016, with the sudden passing of Vernon (Vern) E. Anema, 85, (Grand Rapids, MI.) While he seemed reserved, Vern exuded kindness and found joy in making the people around him happy. Those who were lucky to have known him enjoyed his sense of humor and quick wit. He always had a positive outlook and was able to show patience and understanding, even during challenging times. Vern enjoyed life on every level with his family. Whether it be enjoying a wonderful meal, a Michigan State football game, or his favorite microbrew, he never missed a chance to spend time with those who were near and dear to him. He enjoyed being able to get together with his siblings. And while the distance made it difficult, especially in the later years, he cherished the time they spent together. Vern enjoyed taking care of his landscaping, when he was able. He took pride in his yard, carefully choosing new flowers or plants to add. His favorite were irises. He was a devoted Christian. Vern loved singing in the Chancel Choir at East Congregational Church, where he was a member for over 45 years. He cherished the friendships and support that the church provided, and his deep bass singing voice will be missed in the Sanctuary. Born on March 21st, 1931 in Grand Rapids, MI, he graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1950 and graduated from Calvin College with a degree in History. Vern would get lost for hours reading historical or suspense novels. He was even known to partake in a Band of Brothers marathon. Vern will be fondly remembered and missed by his wife, Judy, of 46 years; his children, LeighAnne Swift; Charles (Alicia) Elkins; Cathleen Anema; Jennifer (Jamie) Buchin; Grandchildren Melissa Toddy; Michael (Julie) Toddy and two great grandchildren; sister, Dawn Vanderveen (Chicago, IL) . He is preceded in death by his parents George and Tena Anema and siblings George Anema and Theo Anema. The family wishes to thank the staff at Spectrum Hospital - Butterworth Campus, especially the Pastoral Care and 5th Floor Intensive Cardiac Care Unit team, the LIFE EMS team along with all the support from friends and co-workers. All are welcome to attend a memorial service to celebrate Vern's life, Saturday, April 30, at East Congregational Church, 1005 Giddings Ave. S.E. Grand Rapids, MI 49506. The family will welcome visitors at 10:00am. The memorial will begin at 11:00am. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to East Congregational Church.
