IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Tom
Schrotenboer
February 22, 1953 – June 9, 2025
Tom Schrotenboer of Zeeland passed away June 9 after suffering injuries in a car crash in Zeeland Township on May 28. He was 72 and leaves behind a wealth of love after a lifetime of worshipping God, supporting his family, working hard, building a business, playing golf, and rooting for the Detroit Tigers.
Born at Zeeland Hospital in 1953, he was the fourth of six children to his mother Stella and father Ben. He graduated from Holland Christian High School before marrying his beloved wife Cindy in 1973 and then working at Herman Miller in Zeeland for 42 years until he retired in 2019.
In 1980, he started Schrotenboer Tax Service, a tax-preparation business, and he continued operating it after his retirement from Herman Miller. It began in a small home office in Zeeland but later grew to have more than 500 clients as he attained status as an enrolled agent and expanded to offer other financial services such as investments and retirement plans. Many of those clients became his friends, who counted on him every year.
Those friends and family knew him for his zest for life, his sense of humor, his passion for golf, his devotion to his wife, his hope for the Detroit Lions, and his pride in his two sons.
He was preceded in death by his mother Stella (1974), father Ben (2013), stepmother Dorothy (2023), father-in-law LaVerne Kortering (2000), mother-in-law Leona Kortering (2005), brother-in-law Austin Meiste (1989) and sister-in-law Francine Schrotenboer (2023).
He is survived by his wife Cindy; his son Brent and daughter-in-law Michele of San Diego, California; and his son Ryan and his significant other Hillary Heinze of East Lansing.
He also is survived by his brother Burnell; brother Ed and sister-in-law Celia; sister Nancy and brother-in-law Walt; sister Kathy and brother-in-law Bob; brother Scott and sister-in-law Julie; stepsister Judy Elenbaas; sister-in-law Sandy and her husband Harold Lampen; brother-in-law Ken Kortering and his wife Nancy; and brother-in-law Kevin Kortering and his wife Penny.
