Obituary

Thomas Henry Bennett lost his long battle with cancer on March 10, 2026, at his home in Hastings, MI. A native Californian, Tom was born in Torrance, CA to Warner and Maida Bennett. His siblings Warner and Sandra Bennett (Joyner) precede him in death.

Tom is lovingly remembered by Nancy Adams Bennett, his loving and devoted wife; stepdaughters and their husbands; Bridget Williams and Ben Williams; Brittany Johnson and Jason Johnson, and cherished grandchildren.

Tom joined the US Navy in 1965. While he was stationed in California, Hawaii and Midway Island, he enjoyed photography, scuba diving, snorkeling, spearing lobsters and the draw of the ocean. He was assigned to various squadrons, namely VX-4, VS-41, and VP 4. Tom traveled to a variety of destinations during his military service, including Japan, Vietnam, and Pacific Islands.

Following his Naval discharge, he pursue a law enforcement career with the California Highway Patrol. Night shift was his favorite time for going after the “bad guys.” Stationed in several CA cities, and Yuma, AZ. He eventually retired on disability due to injuries sustained on the job. Many of his best friends were from the CHP.

Tom worked as a Private Investigator, then went on to be an Investigator with the US Government. After 16 years working for the government, he retired as a Special Agent.

However, in December 2004, he felt compelled to be of service to his country. He went to work for the US State Department. For a year, he trained the Iraqi Police Cadets while stationed in Baghdad and Mousel.

Traveling was a big adventure for Tom. He loved driving or flying to many a destination. He and his wife, Nancy, traveled to Australia, Rome, Italy and numerous National Parks in the Southwest. Travel to Maui was a favorite stop, as they both loved snorkeling, whale watching, Luau and Maui’s famous Mai Tais. Cooking and grilling were a pleasure for Tom. Especially NY steaks, and red chili burritos.

The last few years he slowed down due to his declining health. Resting in the recliner and having the grandchildren visit for birthdays, holidays and playing chess was always a joy for him. He found entertainment in watching the wildlife on our farm. Surrounded by everything from deer, turtles, geese, eagles, sandhill cranes, fox, coyotes, among other many critters.

Thomas will be interred on May 20th, 2026, at 12:00 noon with military honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd, Augusta, MI 49012.
