Tom Geerling, 73, a 48-year resident of Jenison, MI died peacefully from complications of heart disease on May 4, 2021, surrounded by family.

Tom was born in Grand Rapids, MI on September 25, 1947, the youngest of three children of Richard Geerling and Vera (Cole) Geerling. Tom graduated from Belding High School in 1965, where he was actively involved in sports, and especially loved basketball. Tom served in the United States Army in Korea and Germany from 1966 to 1969. After attending Ferris State University and Davenport College, Tom began a thirty-five-year career with Stop N Go Stores and later Sun Oil Company first as a store manager and ultimately a district manager.

In 1972, Tom married Patricia (Whalen) Geerling. Their son Peter Geerling was born in 1979. His wife, Pat, an elementary school teacher at Jenison Public Schools for 30 years, preceded Tom in death in 2001.

Tom loved family, sports, travel, and lawn care. His beautifully manicured yard and home are filled with family photos of his grandchildren, Leo and Rocco Geerling, personal photographs of lighthouses on the Great Lakes, and panoramic shots of national parks located in all of the 50 states to which he traveled.

Tom is survived by a son, Peter Geerling of Jenison, MI, daughter-in-law, Jessica Geerling, their two sons Leo and Rocco; brother, Richard Geerling of Palatine, IL, sister-in-law, Charlie Geerling, niece, Liz, and nephew, Rick; brother-in-law John Trick of Alexandria, VA; brother-in-law Thomas Kurek of Hudsonville, MI, and nephew Jack Lapp; brother-in-law Mike Whalen of Phoenix, AZ, sister-in-law Sandy Whalen, nephew Chris Whalen (Erin), and niece Meredith Jenkins (Khalid).

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Vera Geerling; his wife, Patricia Geerling; his sister, Margaret Trick; and his sister-in-law, Ann Kurek.

Visitation at Ofield Funeral Home in Kentwood, MI is scheduled for May 6, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Jenison, MI will take place on May 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.
