Obituary

Thomas G Allen
September 6th,1937- July 1st, 2022

Tom was born in Scotland and moved with his parents to Detroit, Michigan. He belonged to Our Savior Lutheran Church and attended Denby High School. He excelled at three varsity sports: basketball, tennis, and swimming. He earned the 'Metro Leagues Best In Tennis Champion'. His many academic accolades included a scholarship certificate for 'Outstanding Scholastic Record' from the Detroit Association of Phi Beta Kappa and the distinguished 'Regents Alumni Scholarship' for the University of Michigan.

While attending the University of Michigan he was awarded the 'Monsanto Chemical Company Scholar in Engineering'. Tom was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated with a Chemical Engineering Degree in 1960.

He completed his U.S. Marine Corps training with Platoon 227 on Parris Island South Carolina in 1961. He was deployed stateside as an engineer for his service.

Tom worked early on for Wyandott Chemicals and continued his education. He earned a Law Degree from Wayne State University in 1967 and became a member of the Michigan Bar Association. Tom worked most of his career as an engineer at Chrysler, retiring in 1991. In retirement he continued to consult for General Motors, as well as practiced Law.

Tom met his wife Ann Kling at church. They married in 1963. After residing in Detroit's famous Indian Village neighborhood, they settled in Grosse Pointe to raise their four children. They were part of the St. James Lutheran Church congregation.

Tom and Ann spent most of their time travelling to visit with their children and grandchildren. Holidays were spent camping and hiking through our National Parks, visiting the cottage in Canada, relaxing on Hilton Head Island or working in the barn and enjoying the turning of the leaves in Vermont. They loved antiquing and going to auctions to find hidden treasures and the ultimate deal. Tom had a passion for Windsor chairs, old cars and coins. He liked to enjoy a nice glass of wine, some Greek or Lebanese food or search out a good bagel with his family.

In Tom's free time he played tennis regularly with family and good friends, coached basketball, and practiced his tennis and golf swing wherever he went. He was an avid birdwatcher. He had a passion for woodworking - building many things from clocks to boats. Tom loved to groove to music… particularly Motown. Tom had a dry sense of humor, typical of a Brit. He was a perfectionist with high expectations for himself and others.

During Tom's later years with Alzheimer's disease, he often helped other Memory Care residents in need and kept busy with woodworking projects. His family was there throughout the years for Tom and supported him through the disease to comfort him to the very end. Now Tom is at peace in heaven, enjoying the view from above.

Tom is survived by his wife Ann; daughters Kim, Jill, and Amy; son Scot; grandchildren Karina, Austin, Henry and Skyler.
