Obituary

Theodore F. Gilman, known affectionately as Ted to his friends and loved ones, (a.k.a Hoby, a nickname obtained in the Navy) passed away peacefully on May 3, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on August 8, 1940, in Saugatuck, Michigan, Ted was a man of integrity and warmth, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. He departed this world peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Ted's early life in Saugatuck instilled in him a love for the Great Lakes and the outdoors. He attended Saugatuck High School, where he made lifelong friends and memories. A man dedicated to his country, Ted completed his GED through the Navy, serving with honor and distinction. His time in the Navy was a defining period of his life, shaping his values of discipline, respect, and camaraderie.

After serving his country, Ted embarked on a career that spanned various roles, including maintenance, electrician, and custodian. His strong work ethic and ability to fix just about anything made him a valued employee and a reliable friend. Ted took pride in his work, always ensuring that tasks were completed to the best of his ability. His  contributions to the workplace and his commitment to his fellow workers left a lasting impact.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Marilyn, two daughters: Robin (Walter) Bruins and Tonia (Timothy) Barnes.  Additionally, he affectionately gave each of his six grandchildren childhood nicknames, his sense of humor shining through: Miranda (Brock) Utter – called "Carrot Top" or "CT"; Brandon (Abigail) Bruins – called "B.J."; Megan Bruins – called "Timex"; Ariel (a.k.a Felichia) Vanderberg – called "Frog"; Blake Spykerman – called "Guppy" and Tommy Barnes – he called "Minnow". His two step-grandchildren, Jessica Dexter and Alysia Grant, 1 great grandchild and 4 step great grandchildren also held a place in his heart. Additionally, he is also survived by his sister-in-law Carolyn Gilman, half siblings Nicolette Oshier, Jacquelyn Gilman, and Geoffrey Gilman, nieces, nephews, and many extended family and friends.

He called himself the "Last of the Mohicans" with his parents, James and Zelpha (VanDine) Gilman and siblings, Helen Mae McNeal, Pearl Louise Church, and James F Gilman all preceding him in death.

Ted's zest for life was evident in his many interests. He was an avid camper, finding solace and joy in the tranquility of a good campfire. Bowling was another passion of his, and he could often be found at the local lanes, perfecting his game and enjoying the company of his team. Winter months would see him snowmobile riding, embracing the crisp air and the thrill of the ride. And no matter the season, he was always ready for a game of cribbage, a pastime that brought him laughter and friendly competition.

Ted's legacy is one of love, laughter, and dedication. He lived his life with a sense of purpose and a heart full of joy. His infectious smile and generous spirit  made him a beloved figure in his community and an anchor within his circle of friends and acquaintances.

He faced life's difficulties with a positive attitude, a kind and gentle spirit, a willingness to help anybody out with his hardworking handyman skills, infectious sense of humor, clever one liners and a big goofy grin. He was a man who loved deeply, was brave, strong, loyal, generous, caring, understanding and tender hearted, but could be firm when he needed to be.

As we bid farewell to Ted, we celebrate the life of a man who was a patriot, a craftsman, and a friend to many. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him. Ted's journey through life was marked by the footprints of kindness, the laughter of companionship, and the quiet strength of a life well-lived. It is with mixed emotion that we say goodbye to this man we loved so dearly, we are saddened and our hearts grieve, we will miss him greatly, but we find comfort in knowing that he is now fully healed, free of pain and confusion, and safe in the arms of our Lord and Savior.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 10th at 11:00 am in the Chapel at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Holland with a light lunch to follow in the Community Room at Waverly Meadows.
