IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susanne Marie
Schulte
July 2, 1932 – March 19, 2018
Susanne (Sue) Schulte, 85, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Frank Schulte and her housemate of 60 years, Ilene Anthony. Sue also mourned the death of her past sweet pets, Peanut, Snoopy, Ginger and Kellee. Sue is survived by her beloved sister Nancy Schulte and good friend Diane Curtis. Also surviving are her Mercy Central School of Nursing classmates from 65 years ago. She loved them like sisters and they, in turn, loved her. Sue was born in Grand Rapids and grew up in Traverse City. She graduated from Traverse City Central High School. She was active in sports and proudly played the lead clarinet in the high school band and orchestra. Her talent took her to a summer at Interlochen Music Camp. She graduated from Mercy Central School of Nursing (St. Mary's Hospital) in 1953. She worked at St. Mary's and then worked with Dr. Bob Good. Together they cared for many of the families in Wyoming, MI. Many years after Dr. Good left the practice, Sue's patients continued to call her for health advice and care. Sue then worked for the Kent County Health Dept. as a Nursing Supervisor for the North County. She was a pioneer in the Kent County Lead Screening and Scoliosis screening programs. She completed a Baccalaureate degree and a Masters in Management degree from Aquinas College. She was very active in the Mercy Central School of Nursing Alumni acting as Treasurer for many years. She led the effort to provide Nursing Honor Guards at the funeral of any deceased graduates. She was a devout Catholic, a Eucharist minister and a long-time member of St. Alphonsus Parish. For many years, she took communion to patients at Kent Community Hospital. Sue was an independent single woman who never hesitated to share her thoughts and opinions with others. She was generous and would strive to help anyone in need. She was loved by all who worked or played with her. She suffered with many illnesses and never complained or gave in to the challenges. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be held on March 26 from 6-8 pm with a Rosary Service at 7:30 pm at Ofield Funeral Home (4500 Kalamazoo Ave, Kentwood). A Funeral Mass will be on March 27 at 11:00 am at St. Alphonsus Parish (224 Carrier St NE, Grand Rapids) with visitation from 10-11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to St. Alphonsus Clothing and Food Store.
