Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Steven D. Bierema, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world peacefully on December 19, 2024, at the age of 70, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 29, 1954, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Steve embraced life with a warmth and humor that touched everyone he met.

Steve was the cherished son of Doris and Everett Bierema. Steve attended Parchment High School, where he thrived athletically. A true sportsman at heart, he excelled in football, baseball, and basketball, demonstrating a competitive spirit and a love for the game that would remain with him throughout his life.

On November 24,1973, Steve married the love of his life, Catherine (Lambert) Bierema, at St. Ambrose Church in Parchment, Michigan. Steve's devotion to Catherine was evident in everything he did, and their bond was an inspiration to all who knew them.

Steve started his professional career with his father and grandfather doing deliveries and  eventually working his way up to a commercial printing broker. Steve loved his job in sales and his ability to have a conversation with anyone at any time made him a success.

Family was everything to Steve. He is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine; his cherished children, David and Christy Bierema, Nicole and Michael VanPutten, and Michael and Sarah Bierema; and his grandchildren, Keegan Bierema and Stephan Lainhart. Steve was deeply proud of his family and took immense joy in their accomplishments. He is also survived by his three sisters, Julia Pferdehirt, Sara Chambers, and Elizabeth Flexer, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. Steve is also survived by many amazing friends and his beloved dog Louie.

A man of simple pleasures, Steve had a passion for sports. Whether it was football on Sundays, baseball during the summer, or golf in the warmer months, he was always ready to cheer for his favorite teams. His love for grilling was legendary among family and friends; he took great pride in teaching the next generation the art of cooking outdoors. Frequently, his children would call him for advice on grilling techniques, and he would share his wisdom, embodying the generous spirit that defined him.

Steve's characteristics were hallmarked by his humor and kindness. He was known to be hilariously funny at unexpected moments, bringing laughter into the lives of those around him. He loved watching the deer, swans, geese and songbirds in his backyard and texting photos to his favorite people. His generosity knew no bounds, and he often put the needs of others before his own. These traits left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know him.

In his final days, Steve found comfort in the compassionate care provided by Centrica Care (Hospice of Southwest Michigan). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to this remarkable organization in honor of Steve's memory.

Steven D. Bierema will be deeply missed but will forever live in the hearts of his family and friends. His legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support will continue to inspire those who knew him. A celebration of Steve's life will be held at a later date, where all are welcome to share their memories and stories of this extraordinary man who brought so much joy to the world.
