IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Steve Martin Van
Dyke
May 3, 1950 – September 20, 2022
Steve VanDyke. May 3, 1950 - September 20, 2022. Survived by his wife, Karen (Veldhuis), his children, Kelly Martinez (Rick), Amanda Haynes (Gus), Steve Jr (Jeanna), 13 grandchildren, one great grandson, and his mother-in-law, Harriet Stanaback.
Steve left a mark on all who knew him. He was a husband, a dad, a grandpa, a friend, a master mechanic, a business owner, a car enthusiast, an antique collector, and a proud member of the car club, "Them MisFits". He redesigned a '36 Chevy Coupe Roadster, and themed it after Big Daddy Roth, Rat Fink. It was even signed by Big Daddy Roth's wife, son and brother. He was known amongst his peers as an exquisite masterful engine and transmission builder. He was one of a kind in so many ways. He was a prankster with his own sense of humor that could be trademarked along with his phrase he will forever be remembered by, "You got a dollar?"
When asked what his greatest accomplishment and fondest memories are, he always said, "his family and times with his kids." He cared for the underdogs and would give of his own slim extras to help. He would rise up to set wrongs right, and to help those who couldn't help themselves. He cared about being fair. He loved a deal. He worked hard to provide for his family.
Some of our fondest memories as a family are from the many weekends we spent at the racetrack, Mid Michigan Motorplex, formerly known as Central Michigan Dragway. He raced a pro-stock car to begin, then switched to building and racing a dragster. The smells of burning rubber, and the sights and sounds of the revving engines, will forever evoke senses that go beyond smell and sound, reaching deep into our hearts, drawing us back in a flash to the thrill of the "run" and following behind for the "pick up" at the end of the track to the camp out style grilled hotdogs, concession stand treats and the family camaraderie we shared, and to the memories made.
His time on this earth was too short. We draw on the comfort from the hope and peace in our hearts that we will all be together again in Heaven.
