March 28, 2014 Service: April 3, 2014 Stanley Edward Rhoads, 97, fifty-one days short of his 98th birthday went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 28, 2014. Stan was born on May 19, 1916 to Rev. Ernest and Martha Rhoads in Six Lakes, Michigan. Stan was the eldest of 12 children (6 boys and 6 girls born boy-girl respectively). Stan of Kentwood, is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carol, and sons Edwin (Lorie), Terry (Arleti), Marty (Renee), Daniel; eight grandchildren, Donna, Heather, Jeff, Nicole, Samantha, Amber, Kevin, Randy; four great grandchildren, Michael, Raelyn, Georgette, Airianna; one great-great grandchild, Jesse; brothers and sisters, Ivan, Gordon, Alice, Philip, Laura, Mary Jane; 18 nieces and nephews, 33 great nieces and nephews, and 22 great-great nieces and nephews. Stan graduated from Greenville High School in 1934. He attended Fort Wayne Bible Institute (now Taylor University). He joined the Merchant Marines in 1936 for one year. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1943-1946, European Theater, ranked Technician Fifth Grade. After serving in WWII Stan returned to his old job at Scott Paper Company in Chester, PA. Stan returned to Michigan in 1947. Stan was "out state manager" for the Grolier Society Book of Knowledge for 17 years. He owned Income and Commercial property, built a mausoleum, owned Stan's Tree Toppers, and Kleen Kwik Sewer Cleaning. Stan even "mined". He finished his career as owner of "Fireside Color Portraits" doing family portraits in your home and as a wedding photographer. Stan retired at age 75. During Stan's retirement years he traveled with Carol across all of the United States and in Europe, the Caribbean, South America and Iceland. They enjoyed 18 cruises. Stan lived a blessed and active life. A proud veteran with many friends and an out-going personality. Visitation April 2nd at Heritage Baptist Church from 2-6pm. Memorial service April 3 at 1pm at the church with visitation one hour prior. No flowers, please. Memorial contributions to VFW Post 5602 Six Lakes where Stan was a life member or to the Gideons or Heritage Baptist Church.
