Obituary

Stan Lathrop, age 62, of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away Saturday, October 14, after a long battle with cancer. He loved to say, "If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space," and this was reflected in his favorite pastimes: skydiving, flying, gliding, and snowboarding. He loved learning and trying new things. He found pleasure in his work as a CNC Machinist at Paragon D&E and continued working after his diagnosis. He enjoyed the people with whom he worked. He found the work interesting and satisfying and the work environment's ongoing modernization challenging. He became involved with local independent film-makers and loved working with them both in front and behind the cameras. He also loved to teach. For more than 30 years he taught beginner through advanced skydiving courses, and he was proud of the former students who went on to become professionals and instructors. Less formally, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with co-workers and problem-solving when the opportunities presented themselves. Those who knew him best use words such as "easygoing, playful, thoughtful, smart, and sincere" to describe him. He was all of those things and much, much more. Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie (Rolstead) Lathrop, and his eldest brother, Doug. He is survived by his brothers, Bob and Steve. He is also survived by Doug's widow, Linda, his daughters, Karen and Megan, and her children, Tim, Holly, and Brandy. He is survived by Bob's wife, Roberta, and her daughter, Dani, and Steve's children, Christopher and Melissa. And as Stan used to jest, his extended family includes many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-law's, and outlaws. And speaking of outlaws, he shared his life for more than twenty-four years with his life-partner-in-crime, Lynn. The family is planning both a traditional memorial and an ash-sprinkling memorial. The traditional memorial is being held at the Centennial Room at Founder's Brewery on Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The ash-sprinkling memorial will be scheduled for Summer 2018 at a date to be determined later.
