IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sandra
Pohl
October 3, 1949 – April 22, 2022
Sandra F. Pohl of Grand Rapids, MI, age 72, passed away on Friday, April 22, 2022. She was born to Anthony (Tony) and Antoinette (Ann) Kilbertus on October 3, 1949, in Mt. Clemens, MI.
Sande was born the youngest of three children from a one-bedroom home. With a large extended family, she grew up enjoying frequent family basement parties and playing with her cousins. After graduating from Clintondale High School in 1967, Sande's desire to help others flourish led to her pursuing a Special Education degree at Wayne State University and Grambling University. She met the love of her life, Wolfgang Pohl, while working at his family's gas station, and the two were married on June 10, 1972. Sande and Wolfgang joined the Peace Corps immediately after graduating college, where they were stationed in Jamaica to help special needs children before leaving to welcome their first child.
Sande was a strong, selfless, and caring mother and served as a La Leche League leader for years helping other mothers. Hundreds of kids experienced her guidance and care while she was teaching at Union High School and Reed City High School. Marching to the beat of her own drummer, Sande was always thinking of new inventions, repurposing things, and producing unique and sometimes useful creations. Sande was an artist that loved creating at home. She would make the most of a tough situation, even when spending a couple of days with a broken-down car on a last-minute spring break trip. If you stopped over, you would find Sande putzing away in the garden or working on a project. Always thinking about others, she would spend impractical amounts of time cleaning loose change for the next person. Sande will be missed and not forgotten.
Sande is survived by her beloved husband of forty-nine years Wolfgang G. Pohl; loving children Tia Blevins (Josh), Destin Pohl (Kati), Katherine "Katie" Sukenik (Tom Uden), and Wesley "Stewy" Pohl; brothers Jim Kilbertus and George Kilbertus (Betty); and grandchildren Wyatt Blevins, Anneliese Blevins, Caleb Blevins, Marshall Blevins, Cooper Pohl, Aedith Pohl, and Everly Pohl. She was preceded in death by her parents. The family would like to thank the staff at Spectrum Health Hospice, especially Tammy, for the care provided during her final days.
