Sally played her final hand on July 10, 2018 at age 91 with a bid to join her late husband Joseph R. Pierce, daughter Christine Burt VanHaren and her Lord. Her grace and charm were never dimmed by physical demands, endearing her to all her friends and family in celebrating a spirited life well-lived. She was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church. As an Ottawa Hills beauty she caught many eyes, but Joe Pierce from East won her heart. As their family grew and settled in East Grand Rapids, the water and beaches of Lake Michigan became a lifelong love that has endured with her three surviving children, Mark Pierce, Cynthia (John) Jurgensen and Sara (the late Bob) Grondman. Her winnings at card games at summer cottages on the lake showed everyone just how good she was and how seriously she took all the games she taught us. Many winters in Florida meant the extended family could follow the sun year-round. Over the years Sally tried her hand at a number of commercial endeavors from opening Salmagundi clothing store to selling real estate. But she never wavered from a passion for volunteerism, including PTA, Junior League of Grand Rapids, St. John's Home Guild and many others. Besides the three children, she is survived by numerous grandchildren: Jon Burt, Jennifer (Burt) and Greg Sova, Jessica (Burt) and Jim Carey, Katie Burt, Christopher Jurgensen, Andrew Jurgensen, Peter Jurgensen, Patrick Hubbard, Kelly Hubbard, Chad and Jessie Hubbard and 11 great-grandchildren and surviving brother John Doran. She also leaves several nieces and nephews and many friends old and new. The family would like to thank the staff of Porter Hills Village for the loving care and support given to our loving mother and grandmother. After a private internment on August 4, 2018, the family will greet friends to celebrate Sally at Porter Hills Village Towne Square from 12 - 2 PM. Donations preferred are the Parkinson's Foundation, American Heart Association or a charity of one's choice.
