Ruth Arlene Hunsberger Holik Johnson passed away in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on December 28, 2024, at the age of 97 1/2.
Born in Elkhart County, Indiana, on May 28 th , 1927, she was the oldest of six children born to Charles and Emma (Zimmerman) Hunsberger. After living her early life in rural Elkhart County, she attended Bethel College, where she met her first husband, Leon John Holik.
While married, she and Leon lived in Niles, Michigan, where she led a very hectic life, raising their six children, and working fulltime at Simplicity Pattern Company in Niles. As a family, they enjoyed camping, traveling the United States and parts of Canada, especially enjoying places out west, like Glacier National Park, or Banff in Canada. They also enjoyed trips to the thumb of Michigan to visit relatives.
After marrying Warren Johnson, Ruth lived in Elkhart, Indiana, for several years. They moved to the Bradenton, Florida, area to be closer to her parents, Charles and Emma Hunsberger. She resided in Florida for about 30 years.
Ruth later moved to the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee, after Warren's death, and then to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she lived for several years. Her final move was to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to be closer to her daughters.
Ruth had many interests / favorite things. She always enjoyed going shopping, especially browsing thrift stores of any kind. She loved Gaither Homecoming music, and especially enjoyed attending one of their Christmas concerts in Indianapolis.
When visiting her home, you could always find a jigsaw puzzle being worked, and many books being read. She enjoyed playing bingo with others in her retirement community. The TV would often be turned to The Weather Channel, or Jewelry Network. She loved eating out, with Applebees and other similar restaurants being special favorites.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Johnson, and both of her parents.
Also preceding Ruth in death were four brothers, Charles Wesley Hunsberger, James Hunsberger, twin brothers Arthur and Arlo Hunsberger, and one great grandchild.
Ruth is survived by a sister, Rosemary (Marty) Bechtel, of Sarasota, FL.
Also surviving are her six children, Doris Lynette (David) Kelly, Niles, MI; Daniel Lee (Diana) Holik, Cadillac, MI; Donita Sue Holik, Kalamazoo, MI; David Arthur (Connie) Holik of Indianapolis, IN; Dale Alan (Carrie) Holik, of O'Fallon, IL; and Darla Jo (Edward) Manion, Kalamazoo, MI.
She had fourteen grandchildren: Jeremy (Alexandria) Kelly, Susana Kelly, Daniel Holik, Jr., Kimberly (Scott) Sarrazin, Adriana (Dale) Williams, Juliana Odehnal, Andrew (Becky) Odehnal, Doug Holik, Nicole (Darren) Holtsclaw, Steven (Amy) Holik, Brittany Kinman, Twins Michael and Adam Holik, and Edward Manion, Jr.
Ruth was also blessed with 26 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and 10 step great grandchildren.
An internment service is being held with the family on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. ET, at the Yellow Creek Brick Cemetery, Hoke Cemetery, 64911 County Road 38, Goshen, IN 46526.
