Obituary

Ruth Elaine Hahn (87) passed away at her home in Holland, Michigan Tuesday afternoon surrounded by loved ones. Visitation is 1:30 pm followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00pm, Sunday, November 10th at Zion Lutheran Church at 77 32nd St., Holland, Michigan 49423, (616) 392-7151. Ruth was born in Fosston, Minnesota, on October 30, 1932. She was baptized on November 6th, 1932 and was confirmed in June 1943. As the daughter of a Lutheran Minister, Rev. Oscar Graupner, her early childhood was spent in parishes in Northern Minnesota before the family moved to Amboy, Minnesota. Ruth graduated as a Registered Nurse from Lutheran Hospital - Ft. Wayne, IN in June 1953. Ruth was employed as a Nurse at Lutheran Hospital - Ft. Wayne, when she met Melvin Hahn. After Ruth and Mel were married, she was employed as a Nurse at Sparrow Hospital and Butterworth Hospital prior to starting a family in 1962. Ruth and Mel moved to Holland, Michigan in December of 1959 where they became members of Zion Lutheran Church and raised their family. Ruth enjoyed bike riding, walking, and reading. However, as the quintessential Christian Nurse, her greatest passion was praising the Lord and caring for others. She was actively involved in several organizations and activities that have helped countless people. Among the many contributions Ruth made, she was especially enthusiastic about The Braille Transcribing, Choir, Patterning, Leprosy Federation, Visiting Shut-ins, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Zion Outreach, Stephen Ministry, Migrant Ministry, and Meals on Wheels. Ruth was a kind and generous person whose joy and bright light still shines in the many people whose lives she touched. Her concern for others continues as she requested that only three roses should be purchased for her service to honor her Children, her Grandchildren, and her Great Grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to LCMS Outreach-God's Care for Children Kenya, Lutheran Bible Translators, or Zion Lutheran - Outreach Fund. Ruth's first priority was always God and family. She is survived by her husband Mel Hahn, children Steve Hahn (Deb) of Holland, MI, Phil Hahn (Karen) of Tallahassee, FL, Debra Calvo of Holland, MI, Ruth Robinson (John Paul) of Memphis, TN, brother Rev. Herb Graupner (Jeannie) of Spring Lake, MI, nine grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Ruth is preceded in death by her parents Rev. Oscar and Louise Graupner and sister, Dorothy Shefloe.
