Obituary

Ruth Mitchum Brummett, 91, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, died September 2, 2019 in Grand Rapids. She was born December 2, 1927, in Memphis, Tennessee. Ruth was ordained to the ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in June of 1952. Ruth served with her husband as a missionary in the Philippines, and in pastorates in Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Indiana. She was a registered Social Worker, and an R.N. She served with the Office of Economic Opportunity, initiating the Foster Grandparent Program, and has worked in hospitals, nursing homes, and a sheltered workshop. She and her husband were certified Ombudsmen for Nursing Home residents in Kentucky. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Leonard James Brummett. She is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Aliseri of California, three sons Barry Scott Brummett of Austin, Texas, Gregory Alan Brummett and his wife Janey of Grafton, Illinois, and Kevin Paul Brummett and his wife Meredith of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is also survived by grandchildren Elizabeth Windler, Abram Brummett, Ashley Brummett, Katharine Brummett, Hannah Brown, Eli Brummett, Delaney Brummett, and Brady Brummett. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Lester C. and Virginia Medearis Mitchum, her sister Helen Mitchum White, and her brothers Robert Mitchum and William Mitchum. Her remains were cremated and will be spread at her direction by the family in a private celebration. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Mt. Carmel, Illinois and the First Christian Church of Henderson, Kentucky, or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN.
