Obituary

Ronald Lee Steenwyk of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away on April 12, 2023. He was the son of Louis and Anna (Petroelje) Steenwyk, born on February 18, 1949 in Zeeland, Michigan. Ron was the eldest of 5 children and as a child enjoyed exploring the open spaces around his boyhood home, fishing, building radios, reading, and spending time with his family. Ron married Kathleen Hope Arnoldink of Graafschap, Michigan in 1971. He attended Calvin College and later Calvin Theological Seminary, graduating with a Masters of Divinity in 1980. Ron chose to pursue a career in broadcast engineering and held the title of senior broadcast engineer for much of his career until he retired in 2012. Ron was a loving father, dedicated to the growth and development of his two children (Mark Ronald Steenwyk and Emily Hope Romero Steenwyk) as well as a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 51 years, Kathleen Steenwyk. In his free time Ron loved to build radios, study airplanes, read about faith and history and fish. Ron loved learning about all things radio and this past September passed 3 consecutive tests to become a level 3 Ham Radio operator. Ron was a dedicated disciple of Christ and served faithfully in the church throughout his life. He and Kathleen were members of Grace CRC since 1985.

Ron is survived by his devoted and faithful wife Kathy, his two children Mark and Emily, their spouses Sherry Steenwyk and David Romero, his six grandchildren, Anthony Romero, Sophia Steenwyk, Eli Romero, Victor Steenwyk, Cecelia Steenwyk, and David Romero. He is also survived by his brothers Steven Steenwyk and William Steenwyk, their spouses Nancy Steenwyk and Sally Steenwyk, his sisters Jayne Arnoldink and Judy Seifert, their spouses John Arnoldink and Charles Seifert, and his brother and sister-in-laws Tom and Deb DeBoer. He is preceded in death by his parents Louis and Anna Steenwyk.

The family is deeply grateful for all the love and support we have received from the many family and friends who visited and provided moral and logistical support during this difficult time. We would also like to especially thank the staff at Trinity Health ICU and Faith Hospice for their exceptional care and dedication to the wellbeing and respect shown to Ron and the entire family during the last several days of his life.
