Obituary

Roger D Sagmoe, of West Olive, Michigan (formerly Hastings, Minnesota), age 61, was welcomed into the Lord's presence on Thursday, December 5, 2019. On December 11, 1957, he was physically born, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Edsel & Christina (Krein) Sagmoe, one of ten children. In August of 1975, the angels in heaven rejoiced as he was born again and became an heir of Jesus Christ. His life and purpose changed as shown in this personal statement of faith from his will: "I, Roger D Sagmoe, realizing the uncertainty of this life and with full faith and confidence in the Son of God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and in His death for my sins on the cross and in His shed blood as an atonement for my soul and knowing that by faith in His sacrifice on the cross for me I have eternal life, do make, publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament, hereby expressly revoking any and all of my former wills and codicils. Realizing that when my will is read in public, I will have already graduated into Christ's presence, I want to testify to His constant love and coming judgement this one last time: To my loved ones - having yet to yield to the God whom they, too, will one day stand before, the God who created them and loves them intimately, desiring their fellowship, love and praise - I pray in Jesus' name that you not wait another minute to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior - that we might be together with Him in Heaven for eternity, forever praising Him, forever worshipping Him, forever glorifying Him. To my loved ones knowing Christ as their Savior and Lord - rejoice with me in the certainty that I am with Him in whom I have placed my trust - truly, all is well with my soul - and that we will one day be reunited at His feet, in praise and in worship of Him." As a maturing Christian he sought to model his character after the instruction found in 2 Peter 1:2-11. Roger also developed a deep passion for discipleship-yearning to see others mature in their faith as well. His faith and servant's heart were displayed in many aspects of his life: marriage, family, church, military and work. In 1975, he met and later married the love of his life, Janie (Sutton) Sagmoe. He was faithfully married to her for forty-two years-sacrificially loving, caring and providing for her and his three sons. Roger loved being outdoors in God's creation. He enjoyed taking his wife and sons fishing and camping. As the sons moved out, he would take his wife out often and they enjoyed photography (birds/wildlife/scenic), walking/hiking, lighthouses, waterfalls, Lake Michigan beaches, exploring State/National Parks and going on scenic drives together. He also enjoyed watching movies, football and playing games. Throughout his many moves, he always found a church for his family and himself. God led him several times to serve as a Deacon and then Elder. God also gifted him with the ability to develop, organize and lead Missions & Small Group Ministries. Starting in the mid-70's, Roger served in the US Nuclear Navy for eight years, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (with four years nuclear schooling & prototype instructor and four years on the USS Bainbridge & USS Truxton); known as part of the "God Squad" aboard ship (he and two buddies praying & studying the Scriptures on the fantail). After the Navy, he worked in the commercial nuclear industry for thirty-three years followed by two-and-a-half years in fossil fuel. His primary job was as a Nuclear Engineering Technical Analyst, working in check valves and predictive maintenance (vibrations, ultrasound, thermography & oil). He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers (Jimmy & Danny Sagmoe). Roger's legacy of love lives on in his beloved wife of forty-two years, Janie Sagmoe; his loving children-Andrew (Alison) Sagmoe, Jonathan (Dawn) Sagmoe & Peter (Elise) Sagmoe; nine precious grandchildren-Ethan, Jaden, Zachary, Annabelle, MaKayla, Evan, Maxwell, Natalie & Abigail; seven brothers & sisters-Ralph (Sarah) Sagmoe, Nancy (Jim) Sayles, Kathy Sayles, Michael Sagmoe, Bianca (Greg) Robell, Julie (Dennis) Sayles & Kingsley Mast; his stepdad-Russell Hake; and Janie's parents- John (Nancy) Jenkerson (for whom he was ever so grateful for their bond and how they treated him as their own). The family would like to thank Hospice of Holland for their care and compassion during Roger's unexpected diagnosis and short prognosis of cancer. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Simply Cremations in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
