September 14, 2013 Service: September 19, 2013 Roger C. Duiven, age 74, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013. Roger was born on May 9, 1939 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and attended South High School. He joined the United States Army and proudly served in Germany from 1963 to 1965. Roger would always say he was on guard duty in Germany when he got word that President Kennedy had been assassinated. At age 13, Roger's father, Louis died of a heart attack and Roger helped support his family by working on the Patterson farm for the next four years. It was there that he fell in love with farm life and 4-H. Roger proudly worked for Pioneer Construction as a cement finisher for 33 years. There he made many lifelong friendships with coworkers. Roger loved the outdoors and all animals, especially his squirrels and dogs. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Harriett Duiven, his in-laws of 26 years, Bud and Bev Heyman, his beloved wife of 26 years, Lynn Heyman Duiven, and his sister-in-law, Linda LeHigh Marcusse. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Vel Longoria Duiven, his son, Karl (Jennifer), grand daughters Kiersten and Katelin, son Kurt and grand son Kyle (Emily), great grandson Kaydon and grand son Kasey. Step-son Larry (Stacy) Meeusen, grandchildren Lauren (Mother - Bridget Rockwell), Amanda, Preston and Courtney, step-daughter Michelle (Troy) Addington and grandchildren Dane and Faith. Also surviving are his sister Marge (Larry) Burch, brother Don (Margie) Duiven, brother John (Sue) Duiven, and sister-in-law Sue (Gary) Gladstone, along with numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice, the ASPCA or the Humane Society. There are not enough words to thank the amazing dedication and compassion shown by all of the Hospice care workers to Roger and his family. Friends and family are welcome to the visitation on Wednesday, September 18 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at Ofield Funeral Home. The Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 19 at 11:00am with Pastor Joe Beavan officiating at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood.
