Robert Scott Crane (Bert) passed away at home on November 6, 2024, surrounded by family, after a courageous six-year battle with melanoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sally Serier and S. Scott Crane, and grandparents, Ernest and Evelyn Serier and Sherman and Nina Crane. He is survived by his wife, Deb, sons, Austin (Dana), Hunter (Mindy), Blake (Megan) and Parker, grandchildren Everett, Kennedy and Aleyah, sisters Chris (Jim) Otto, Stephanie (Paul) Nord, brother-in-law Craig (Melissa) Lowrie, nephews Andrew (Elle) Otto, Nathan (Sami) Bird, niece Megan Lowrie, great nephews Danny and Benny Bird, and dogs Badger and Doug.
Bert was born in Stillwater, Minnesota on January 20,1968. He graduated from New Richmond High School in 1986 and Michigan Technological University in 1990. He met his wife Deb in college at Michigan Tech, both accepted engineering positions at General Motors in Detroit straight out of college, and married in October of 1991. They moved to Grand Rapids after the birth of their second son, eventually started their own business remodeling, for many customers who became friends. He also applied his passion for golf installing synthetic putting greens throughout Michigan and surrounding areas. Bert then re-entered the automotive industry as a quality engineer/manager, where he was still employed at Matcor Automotive.
Bert was a great dad, coach, boss and friend. His attitude was always a glass half full or more, he greeted each day with a positive attitude and a sense of humor. The highlight of Bert's life was his family. He taught his boys to work hard and care for other people. He shared his love and enthusiasm for golf, hunting, fishing, playing sports and the value of hard work. He enjoyed coaching their numerous athletic teams over the past 25 years, and always said he would be a full time youth coach if he could pay the bills. As much as he loved spending that time with his sons, he had a true passion for mentoring and encouraging all of the players on every team he coached. It was important for him to build kids up, and help them learn the values of teamwork that would help them in the future. While he coached many different sports over the years, lacrosse was a major part of his life, with 18 years straight of at least one of his boys, if not all of them playing. The boys are all avid golfers, and they enjoyed sharing that time as well. As his boys have grown and moved on in life, it is a tribute to his hard work and talent that all four of his boys are talented builders/carpenters. Bert was a positive motivator and people he met wanted to be around him. He will be dearly missed by all.
