Robert (Bob) Craig Bouwens entered his eternal home on December 16, 2025, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born on May 5, 1953, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Bob's life was a testament to the values of hard work, responsibility, adventure, and, above all, the love of family.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Rynard and Bernadine Bouwens, sister Pam (Rick) Hatkowski, and nephew RJ Bouwens. He is survived by his siblings Randy (Pearl) Bouwens, Gary (Ellen) Bouwens, Nancy (Jerry) Edgerle, and Pat Danenberg, wife of the late Bill Danenberg.
With loving parents and five siblings, Bob grew up in a lively household creating cherished memories that lasted a lifetime. At a young age, Bob took over his eldest brother's paper route. Within a few years, he was juggling multiple jobs, building a strong work ethic and an enduring drive for independence.
Bob attended Lee High School, where he excelled both as a multi-sport athlete and as a dedicated student. On the football field, he was affectionately nicknamed "Moose," a testament to his strength, size, and skill as a starting lineman. Beyond academics and athletics, Bob pursued his passion for hot rods, purchasing and transforming his beloved Maverick into a street rod — a project that reflected his determination and lifelong love of cars. By the time he graduated, he had already forged the discipline, determination, and character that would shape his career and the life he built for his family.
After graduation, Bob began a long and distinguished career as a Midwest regional truck driver with Gordon Food Service. His dedication to safety and excellence earned him membership in the prestigious Million Mile Safe Driver Club.
A man of Christian faith, Bob lived his beliefs not through grand gestures but with intention through his actions and the way he treated others. His was a quiet devotion, one that found joy in the melody of worship songs, illustrated Bible stories with his family, and fellowship of his church community. Bob's faith was his compass, guiding him through life's tribulations and celebrations.
Bob's adventurous spirit was as vast as the open road he so loved to travel. Mexico and the U.S. National Parks held a special place in his heart, destinations that spoke to his love for exploration and the beauty of nature. He made sure to travel with his parents and his family from the East to West Coast, always looking beyond the horizon for what he could experience with those he loved. Whether he was wrenching on cars, cheering on Michigan football, or engaging in his passion for drag racing, Bob embraced life with zeal and enthusiasm.
Bob met the love of his life, Sheri (Dekker) Bouwens, of Traverse City, while still in high school. Soon after, they married and together built a beautiful life and family. For 46 years, Bob devoted himself wholeheartedly to his wife, cherishing their journey through joys and challenges alike. Though illness eventually took much from him, it could never diminish the sweetness of his spirit, which remained a constant gift and enduring source of strength to those who loved him.
Above all, Bob was a family man. His children, Tammy Ashby, Christina Bouwens (Jeff Bush), Adam (Lena) Bouwens, and Travis Bouwens, were the center of his universe. Bob instilled in them the values of perseverance and selflessness, demonstrating through his actions the power of unconditional love. Bob's relentless commitment to ensure his children had everything and every opportunity he could provide was remarkable and continues to be a lasting legacy. His grandchildren, Libby, Jesalyn, Madison, Layla, Hailey, and Whitney, who brought him immeasurable joy, will carry forward his legacy of kindness and unwavering strength.
Those who knew Bob may remember a man of few words but infinite generosity — a person who could strike up a conversation with a stranger and leave them feeling like an old friend. Fearless, adventurous, loving, and selfless, Bob's presence was a gift to all who had the pleasure of his company. Bob has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his loved ones and his community. As he reunites with his family in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we celebrate a life well-lived and cherish the memories he has gifted us. Bob's spirit — a bright beacon of love, laughter, and devotion to his family — continues to guide and inspire all who knew him.
