Obituary

April 21, 2012 Service: May 23, 2012 Robert (Bob) Houghton Beaman, 64, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2012 from complications of diabetes. Those fortunate enough to experience Bob will cherish the memories of his generosity, spirited conversations about current events and business, and his loyalty toward his friends. One grew to appreciate and ignore the occasional gruff exterior that masked the soft interior. Bob was guided by tradition, duty and a respect for history. His respect for the past developed into a love of antiques - none more beloved than the 1968 Jaguar that he lovingly and begrudgingly kept running the past 44 years. Bob graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and earned his BA from Harvard University and his MBA from The Wharton School of Business. He served with pride as a member of the US Army serving in Vietnam. For the better part of his career, he served as the President and CEO of the F Raniville and Ton-Tex Corporation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His commitment to community was demonstrated by his leadership in The American Cancer Society, Economic Club of Grand Rapids, Blythefield Country Club and East Congregational Church. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Virginia Beaman. He is survived by his brother William Scott of Ann Arbor, Michigan, sister Nancy Tanke and her husband Robert of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and their children, Lisa Martin and her daughter Emily of Holly, Michigan and Scott Tanke of St. Petersburg, Florida. He will be fondly remembered as "Uncle Bob" by many of his friends' children-wrapping the perfect Christmas gift in his traditional signature newspaper. His closest friends, "The Killer Bees", will ensure that his memory is regularly honored and stories are told, with love and affection-on the course at Blythefield-one of his favorite places. Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, May 23 at 4pm in East Congregational Church, 1005 Gidding SE. Memorial contributions can be sent in his name to The Grand Rapids Community Foundation.
