Ricky John VanderLaan, known affectionately as Rick, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2024, at the age of 69, in Grand Rapids Michigan, surrounded by his family and friends. Born on November 6, 1954 in Jenison Michigan to John and Betty VanderLaan. Rick was a man characterized by his goofy sense of humor, loving nature, contagious laugh, and strong work ethic. Though he had his struggles in life he always kept a smile on his face and offered to help those around him.
Rick dedicated many years of his life working at Stephen's Pipe and Steel, where his commitment and hard work were evident to all who worked alongside him. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, hunting, and in his younger years riding his motorcycle. Rick also cherished many moments spent with his beloved dog, T-Rex, who brought much joy and companionship into his life.
Rick is survived by his loving family that includes his children Ryan (Jenny) VanderLaan, Lindsy (Michael) Tiderington, and Jamie (Kory) Jannerth; grandchildren Colby, Jesa, Brennan, Logan and Jadyn; brothers Ron (Tina) VanderLaan and Jim VanderLaan; sisters Barbara (Rich) Grant and Sandra (James) Berry; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father John VanderLaan and mother Betty Bruxvoort.
Rick's loving spirit, easy going personality and goofy demeanor left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He is finally free from all suffering and has found peace.
A celebration of life for Rick will be held at Gezon Park on Sunday, July 28th 11am-1:30pm.
