Richard (Dick) Schaner, age 88, of Kentwood, MI passed away on June 15, 2022, after battling cancer.
Richard was born on September 18, 1933, in Grand Rapids, MI, to August and Rose (Stolp) Schaner. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Bonnie Frances Elliott; both parents; Step-father, Clayton Twiss; brothers, August, Don, Lewis, and Tommy; sisters, Marian, Lorraine, Katherine, Doris, Betty and Ruth; and his little dog, Freedom.
Richard is survived by his children; Bonnie Susan Zerrenner, Richard (Kathy) Schaner, David (Bev) Schaner; grand-children, Chrystal Schaner Lobdell and David Eli Schaner; great-grandchildren, Bobby, Summer, Elliott and Rosie; brother, Russell Schaner and sister-in-law, Maxine Schaner; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. His tremendous love and devotion to his wife, children, grand-children and great grand-children were beyond measure. His love for all children - made him "Papa" to all. Starting at a young age, he spent his life always doing for others and continued to do so until his passing.
Richard served as a proud Sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corp, in Korea during the Korean War. He was employed with Michigan Fleet / Walker Industries - a Division of Kysor Industries after his honorable discharge from the U. S. Marine Corp until his retirement.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 20th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, Tuesday from 12:30-1pm. A funeral service will be held for Richard on Tuesday at 1pm all at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood, MI 49508.
His family would like to thank Michigan Veteran Services for their assistance and the staff at MediLodge of Holland and Spectrum Hospice for the care and attention they gave Richard.
