Obituary

Rachael Jeffries, 57, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away on August 18, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on June 22, 1969, in Port Huron, Michigan, Rachael spent her early childhood in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, before moving to St. Clair, Michigan, where she grew up and graduated from St. Clair High School. She later earned her degree from the University of Michigan, a reflection of the intelligence and determination that defined her throughout her life.

Rachael built a successful career in Detroit's automotive industry, where she worked for many years in quality control roles. She was known for her sharp mind, attention to detail, and relentless pursuit of understanding. Gifted with both intelligence and curiosity, Rachael possessed a rare ability to teach herself nearly anything she set her mind to learn. Whether repairing iPads and iPhones, developing mobile applications, brewing beer, or mastering a new skill, she approached every challenge with enthusiasm and determination.

Those who knew Rachael best will remember her brilliant but wonderfully obsessive mind. In the Jeffries family, spirited debate was practically a pastime, and it was common for the siblings to take opposing sides of an argument simply for the joy of testing ideas and viewpoints. Rachael embraced those discussions wholeheartedly, bringing intelligence, passion, and humor to every exchange.

Later in life, she combined her love of learning with her appreciation for craft brewing and worked at the Michigan Beer Cellar, where she continued to share her enthusiasm for new experiences and connecting with others.

Rachael was also an exceptional cook whose creativity extended into the kitchen. One cherished family memory is of a Thanksgiving meal when she made pumpkin pie entirely from fresh pumpkins, transforming a traditional dessert into a labor of love. Holiday meals spent cooking alongside family became treasured traditions and created memories that will be carried forward for generations.

Rachael is survived by her sisters, Jennifer Zelenak and Julie Jeffries; her brother, Mark Jeffries, and his wife, Polly Jeffries; her brother-in-law, VJ Zelenak; and her beloved nieces and nephew, Madison Jeffries, Tara Minge, and Nick Minge.

Though cancer ultimately claimed her life, it never defined her. Rachael will be remembered for her remarkable intellect, independence, determination, and the deep love she shared with her family. Her legacy lives on in the stories, traditions, laughter, and memories she leaves behind.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
