Obituary

Phyllis J Jackson, age 72, passed away peacefully at home in Muskegon Heights, MI, following a long term chronic illness.

Phyllis J Merriweather was born on August 21, 1951, in Carrollton, Alabama, to James H Merriweather (1/2012) and Gladys (Pope) Merriweather(12/2012).  She was the oldest of seven children and a true matriarch.  Phyllis  graduated from Muskegon High School class of 1970 and later attended Baker Business College.

Phyllis later start working at GTE (Verizon).

She was briefly married to Lucas Gavin, who past away shortly after marriage. She later met Horace Jackson, who preceded her in death in 1981. Phyllis moved from Muskegon, MI to Hershey, PA in 1993, where she retired from Verizon in 2003.  She loved to help under privileged youth and the homeless community at the MAP church.  After retirement, Phyllis worked as a secretary in a church in Steelton, PA, AARP, and the American Red Cross in Harrisburg, PA. She later returned back to Muskegon, MI to rejoin her family.

Phyllis is survived by children: Angel (Muskegon, MI), Princess (Harrisburg, PA), Starr (Montgomery, AL), and Philmore (Muskegon, MI).  Phyllis is also survived  by 12 grandchildren: Zachariah, Chauncey, Serenity, Demarkeo, Jeffery, Mariah, Jeremiah, Taniya, PJ, Philmore Jr., King, and Kadence Jean; brothers and sisters: Wayne D Merriweather, Frank (Jennifer) Merriweather, Evelyn Merriweather, Matthew O Merriweather, and Cynthia F Merriweather; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was proceeded in death by parents, James H. Merriweather and Gladys Merriweather; and brother, Edward C. Merriweather .

Phyllis loved her family, especially her children and grandchildren.  She was commonly referred to as SEXY "P" by her children. Phyllis enjoyed traveling, bingo, the casino, and shopping.  Phyllis also love the state of Michigan. She would give her last to anyone and never look down on anyone. Phyllis was surrounded  by love by her family after a long battle with breast cancer.

Phyllis' celebration services will be hosted on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 11:00 am, at Beulah Baptist Church, 2601 Manz St., Muskegon Heights, MI 49444.

Ofield Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
