Obituary

Philip James Savickas, known as Phil to his friends and family, passed away on March 14, 2025, following complications from a stroke the month prior. Born on October 14, 1962, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Phil's life was marked by his jokes, practical and historical knowledge, and handiness. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend whose memory will be cherished by all who knew him. Phil grew up in Grand Rapids, where he attended West Catholic High School, leaving a legacy of laughter and camaraderie. Shortly after graduating, he went on to serve as a mechanic in the Army, where he honed his skills and developed a strong work ethic. After his service, Phil transitioned into a career as a welder, a trade where his precision and dedication were greatly appreciated. His personal life was filled with hobbies and interests that reflected his personality. Phil was a committed gamer, connecting with online friends in virtual worlds. He also had a deep appreciation for history, frequently visiting museums with his lifelong buddies, delving into the stories of the past. Phil's love for good food led him to explore new restaurants, but never at the expense of his loyalty to local dining spots. In his earlier years, Phil was an avid sportsman. He cherished the times spent fishing or hunting, though those who knew him well would jest that it was merely an excuse for sharing beers and laughter in his friend's cabin. These moments were a testament to Phil's ability to find joy in the simple pleasures of life and to create lasting memories with those he held dear. Phil is survived by his loving wife, Cherri; daughter and son-in-law, April and Khoi (Savickas-Nguyen); and daughter, Cassandra Savickas. His legacy is also carried on by his siblings, Jean and Doug Bressler, Pete and Diane Savickas, Rich and Loretta Savickas, Joe and Grace Savickas, Teri and Steve Coker, Rose Phelps, Fran and Paul Hayes, Lynn and Roy Stowe, Barb and Don Pant, Greg and Lisa Savickas, Tony and Linda Savickas, and Margie and Mike Orlikowski. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss his presence. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Elizabeth Savickas, and his sisters, Deb Elenbaas and Mary Dine. As we say farewell to Philip James Savickas, we celebrate the indelible mark he left on our hearts. His stories will be told, his jokes will be repeated, and his wisdom will be passed down, ensuring that his spirit lives on. Phil's departure is a profound loss, but we will remember his humor and ability to sing every song a half-second before the lead singer (most notably, Led Zeppelin). A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1-3pm Saturday, April 5th, 2025, at True Life Bible Church (4550 Byron Center Ave SW, Wyoming, MI 49519). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Phil's life. Please bring a dish to pass and a story to share.
