Philip Clair Jones age 86 of Paw Paw, MI died peacefully on Monday June 5, 2023. He was born on April
21,1937 to Arthur and Opal (Bowdre) Jones in Avery, IA.
He grew up with a love for baseball and loved to tell about his days of playing with "the old men" who
were probably 20 years old when he was only 13-14 years old.
On June 16,1958 Phil married the love of his life Evelyn Sue Sweeden. He graduated from the University
of Iowa in 1966 with a degree in Civil Engineering. While living in Iowa he could often be found pheasant
and duck hunting with his father, brothers and sons.
In 1978 Phil and Sue moved from Cedar Rapids, IA to Paw Paw, MI. After moving to Michigan he had
more opportunities to pursue his love of fly fishing. He loved all rivers, but his favorites were the Au
Sable and Pere Marquette where he fished with his daughters and sons. He was a proud member of
Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, Anglers of the Au Sable and North American Versatile Hunting Dog
Association.
Phil is survived by his children Peg (Garth) Weaver, Mike (Kathy) Jones, Melonie Jones, Paula (Tony)
Coston, Evan Jones, Darcy (Jay) Sobel, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; siblings Charles
(Sharon) Jones, Jerry (Mary Ellen) Jones, Ruth (Rich) Kelley, Margaret (Randy) Boysel, and Glen Jones;
sister in law Wanda Fenton, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved
wife of 63 years Evelyn Sue in 2021, son Jerry in 2007, and grandson Jim in 2013, his sister Dorothy,
brothers Richard and Delbert.
A memorial will be held at a later date.
