Obituary

Wallace Philip "Phil" Ardussi, 90, of Rocky River, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, from complications related to Parkinson's disease.

Born on February 28, 1934, to Wallace Francis Ardussi and Faith Farmer Ardussi, Phil lived a life defined by service, curiosity, and quiet dedication to his community and family. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1958 and served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea shortly after marrying Ann Covell on July 26, 1958. Though the Korean War had ended, his time in the service instilled a sense of duty that would shape the rest of his life.

Phil had a remarkable talent for technology and a gift for bringing the past to life. He built a television from a kit, carried one of the first mobile phones, and was active in early online communities like FidoNet - long before the internet became commonplace. Phil's love of model trains also became a joyful part of his home life; his basement train table was a wonder to visitors, young and old. He also loved photography and was often seen with a camera slung over his shoulder, ready to capture a moment.

A passionate historian, Phil spent three years researching and co-authoring Rocky River Yesterday, a 400-page chronicle of the city's past. Presented with warmth and wit at the Rocky River Senior Center, his book gave readers a glimpse into local history through 360 rare photos and untold stories. "This city is what it is because of its people," he said during its unveiling - an idea he truly believed.

He was a proud and devoted Rotarian for over 55 years, honored by District 6630 for his decades of service. Phil's Rotary journey began in 1961, sponsored by his father, and spanned multiple clubs and cities. He served as president of the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club in 1979 and later of the Lakewood and Rocky River Rotary Club in 2014. Rotary was a family tradition - his father, mother, uncle, and grandfather were all involved - and Phil carried it forward with pride. He was passionate about supporting youth programs and honoring the club's legacy.

Throughout his life, wherever they lived, Phil was an active church member, contributing as an Elder, a lay leader, a choir member, and a high school group leader. Phil was known for his sharp wit and love of "dad jokes," which he delivered with perfect timing and a sparkle in his eye. He also threatened his church choir that he was ready to do his accordion solo, even bringing an accordion to choir practice to reinforce the joke. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend.

Phil is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ann Covell Ardussi; his children, Suzanne Ardussi Brown (Dave), John C. Ardussi (Anju), Elizabeth Ardussi Grace (Marie), and Deborah Ardussi Heed (Tom); his brother, Steve Zehnder Ardussi; and five grandchildren, Ann Marie Brown, Ryan Brown, Kai Grace, Alex Heed, and Nathan Heed (Victoria) who are expecting his first great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John August Ardussi, and granddaughter Carlee Grace.
