Obituary

Otto Charles Press, better known as Charlie by most, passed away March 8, 2022 and was reunited with his beloved wife of 65 years, Nancy Miller Press.

Remembering him with love are his 4 children; Edward Press, William Press (Paula), Thomas Press (Stella) and Laura Burns (Thomas) and his grandchildren; Katie Rak (Mike), Frank Press, Samantha Press, Tiana Harris (Matt), Lexi Press, Halley Press, Steve Burns (Wendy) and his great grandchildren; Ashley and Evan Burns and Beckham Rak and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Otto and Laura Press, his sisters Minna Press and Laura Uthlaut, his brother, Ernst Press and two brother in laws, Dr Owen Miller and Robert Miller, and his beloved wife, Nancy.

Charlie was born in St Louis, Missouri on September 12, 1922 and was raised by his parents, Reverend Otto and Laura. Charlie was not only the son but a brother and brother-in-law of Church of Christ ministers and the nephew of several theologians. Charlie grew up in St Louis, fought in WWII and subsequently obtained his PhD from The University of Minnesota on the GI bill. He married his beloved wife, Nance and they had 4 children. She died in 2016 by his side and she was grievously missed by him. Yet he continued to read and work on his novels (12) during his remaining years engaging staff, family and his many friends. Charlie taught at North Dakota Agricultural College and The University of Wisconsin before coming to Michigan State University in 1958 where he stayed until he finished his career in 1991. He was a professor of Political Science at MSU and rose to become Chairman of the Political Science Department. During his tenure, he wrote several books on politics and government some of which are still used by departments of political science and all of which may still be read. Charlie and his late wife, Nancy loved to travel. They traveled around the world not once but twice! She also accompanied him as he taught MSU students abroad in London and in Australia. The globe was his playground.

But both Charlie and Nancy had a favorite oasis of their own in this world and it was, their cottages on Lake Michigan beach! They liked to call it, "Cares End". Many family and friends have visited their Whiskey Creek haven. Family will spread Charlie's ashes 'At The Lake' this summer. Nancy has been waiting for him since 2016.

Charlie was an accomplished yet very humble man. He became President of The Midwestern Political Science Association, was a leader of the Urban League of East Lansing, a County Commissioner, a recipient of the Distinguished Professor's award, supervisor of Ingham County Board, was cited in Who's Who 1991 edition, and was an honored member of the Sherlock Holmes Society.

Charlie spent his life fighting for justice and equality for all. He firmly believed in fighting for the good of others. He was wise beyond his 99 years. He bled blue for his Dems and green for his Sparty's and wouldn't have it any other way! He had a happy outlook on life. He inspired, encouraged and respected others and he had a silly sense of humor. He was kind, generous and genuine. He brought out the good in others. People liked to be around Charlie. He was a good son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, colleague and mentor and he will be missed by all who remember him. Rest In Peace Dad, Grandpa, great Grandpa.
