Obituary

Nancy Scott Stofer Brehm of Saugatuck, Michigan (formerly of Howell) passed away on Friday, December 30th, at the age of 70 after a short illness. She was the proud daughter of Kenneth Lamont Stofer and his wife Ruth Ann Scott Stofer, of Rocky River, Ohio.

Nancy (Nan, Scotty, Stofs, Brehmster, or Mima) was the only child of notable local athletes; Ken a professional footballer (go Bills!) and Ann, an 18-time ladies' champion at Lakewood Country Club. She graduated from Rocky River in 1970 (go Pirates!) and matriculated at Syracuse University (go Orange!), where she started her lifelong love affair with Delta Gamma and the sisters that became family - ITB, goddesses! From there, she started her career in Seattle before settling into her permanent home in Michigan, where she completed her Master's in Education at the University of Michigan (go Blue!).

Her two passions in life were her family and education. She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren, but if you knew her, she would have already told you that herself ad nauseam. Nancy was the loudest clapper at sporting events and the biggest smiler at graduations. Mrs. Brehm also had the pleasure of teaching thousands of students at Pinckney High School (go Pirates again!) for 28 years. She maintained close contact and friendships with countless students and colleagues throughout the years, and cherished the connections she made with them. Nancy was a strong, proud, and loyal woman whose mission in life was to raise children (her own and others') to work hard and spread seeds of happiness wherever they went.

If she were to give some helpful life advice, it would be to always pack a bathing suit, just in case, and to pack it in your carry-on if flying. Every time you dip your toes into the water or the sand, or finish a book you just couldn't put down, we hope you'll think of mom.

Nancy is survived by her daughter Courtney and son-in-law Gary, her son Steven, and her son Miles and daughter-in-law Mary; grandchildren Maggie, Drew, Tessa, Owen, Cohen, and Fitz; cousins including Colburns, Gibbs, Stofers; and many other "family members" she brought into the fold along the way. She was predeceased by her loving parents. The family would like to thank Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids and Hospice of Holland for their attentive and tender care.

All are welcome to attend a visitation from 1:00-5:00pm on January 14th, at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts. A celebration of life, in Nancy's own way, will be held this summer on June 10th in West Michigan; bring your dancing shoes and maybe a bathing suit, just in case.

Nancy was able to enjoy a field of flowers before her passing. Those wishing to offer expressions of sympathy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, where she proudly made her final home.
