IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Morris Willard
Handlogten
September 26, 1932 – April 6, 2025
Handlogten, Morris Willard of Allegan, Michigan was born at home in Grand Rapids, MI and passed away peacefully with family at Rose Garden - Kent County at the age of 92. He was: Preceded in death by his Father Henry, Mother Bessie, Wife Norma (Shafer), & Sister Lucy Okke. Survived by Daughter Deborah Dufour, Son Roger Handlogten, 7 Grandchildren: Josh, Zach, Ashley, Kyle, Alison, Ben & Garrett. & 14 Great-Grandchildren.
As a 7 year old, his Uncle Ben taught him how to play Little Joe Wrangler on his 1st guitar. He remembers moving to Ypsilanti, where Bessie riveted and Henry wired B-24's for WWII. In HS he was known as "Mook" and played Varsity Football 4 years, while working 3 jobs as a paper boy & nights at Heckman Bakery and Home Acres Block Co to help support his family. After graduation he joined the Army and served his country in Korea, being trained as a medic in Japan. He was known as Doc and saved lives at Heartbreak Ridge & on the front lines, later ending his service at Navy Pier in Chicago. His motto: Do the right thing!
Morris met Norma on a blind date in GR. They were married 6/11/1955 and were married for 65 years, residing in many homes he built, including their home on Miner Lake in Allegan and in Spring Hill, FL. He was a carpenter & home builder and moved his first purchased home by jacking up a 2-story farmhouse and using logs to roll it a mile across the field onto his new foundation that he said "fit perfectly". In his late 40's he retired and they enjoyed traveling out West, Branson, MO, & the South.
He was the "rock" of his family - teaching honesty, hard work, dedication and will power. He always had a smile on his face, was positive, yet expected your best! He taught Rog & Deb to Water Ski with a one foot beach take off! Why get wet? Music/guitars, motor cross, golf, waterskiing, boating, flea markets, building, creating, antique car & truck restoration projects were his love, along with family, friends, tall stories, & the gift of gab!
Morris believed in God and was looking forward to Heaven. He was a loving & kind friend to all and will be missed by family, friends, and neighbors. The family will have a celebration of life for Morris and Norma on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at Ofield Funeral Home 4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood, MI 49508. 1-2 pm Visitation and 2-3 pm service/sharing/tall stories.
