January 2, 2015 Weiks - Michael David Weiks, aged 66, of Howard City, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2015 and took hold of the hand of our loving God and followed Him home. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jeanette Weiks. He is survived by his children, Jennifer (Freddie Parker) Weiks-Kubany, Michael-John (Amanda) Weiks; grandchildren, Ashley Alkema and Kimberly Docter, Charles Weiks; brother, John (Mary) Weiks; nieces, Katy Weiks, Laura Weiks, Amy Weiks; numerous cousins; dear friend, Sue DeBruyn; and his beloved dog, Bridget. Mike loved the outdoors, especially the Hardy Dam area where he camped, fished and boated. In recent years, Mike began brewing "shine" using his grandfather's still from the late 1800s. He loved to tell stories and enthralled his family and the staff at Heartland with his many tales, often embellished with his wonderful sense of humor. Mike enjoyed all types of automobiles and was a car mechanic by trade but could fix just about anything he touched. He could also build anything he put his mind to. The family would like to thank Mike's care team at Heartland Health Care Center and especially the Heartland Hospice team for their loving care. Thanks, too, to Fr. Jim, pastor of Christ the King - St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Howard City, where Mike was a member, for his many visits to Grand Rapids during the 7 months that Mike was a patient at Heartland. Mike deeply appreciated the many cards, prayers and visits from members of his parish community, family and friends. Thanks also to Wild Birds Unlimited on the East Beltline for donating birdseed so that Mike could enjoy the birds and squirrels outside his window. Visitation beginning at 10:00AM followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 11:00AM will be held at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood, MI 49508 on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Contributions to either Heartland Health Care Center or to Heartland Hospice of Grand Rapids in Mike's memory would be appreciated.
