Obituary

Mel, age 74, died on October 22, 2017. He was born in 1942 to Julian and Agnes Aukeman. He served in the US Army from 1966-1968 and became a most valuable pitcher on the Army softball team in Germany. He was a builder and artist who was dedicated to making impressive one-of-a-kind creations - notably the McKendree's Jewelry storefront located on Wealthy St. in Grand Rapids, and a beautiful ceremonial Mace created for the General Motors Institute. He also enjoyed gardening. He was a good friend to many and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his siblings: William Aukeman, Frank and Anita Aukeman, Carl Aukeman, Thelma and Bill Bolhuis, Julian Aukeman, and Nellie and Bill Masselink. He is survived by brothers Owen (Marylou) Aukeman, and his twin Calvin Aukeman and Mary Pieczarka, sisters-in-law, Ann (William) Aukeman, Ann (Frank) Aukeman, Thelma (Carl) Neinhuis, and Elaine (Julian) Aukeman. He is also survived by dozens of loving nieces and nephews and their spouses. He received special care thanks to Faith Hospice. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Mel's life will be held at a place and time to be determined.
