Melva Jean Sutherland(Jeanne), 78, of Big Rapids passed away peacefully at Butterworth hospital on July 22, 2026. She was born on November 23, 1947, in Big Rapids, Michigan to Melvin and Wanda Cooley. She married Don Cole then later married Bruce Sutherland.

She retired from Mecosta County General Hospital after 43 years of service in 2015. She then worked at McDonalds for 5 years in Big Rapids.

She is survived by her two sons and one step-daughter, Dean (Ralen) Cole of Mesick, Bruce (Cathy) Sutherland of Mecosta, Kim (Russ) Bordine of Newaygo, very special significant other Norm Jackson, (11) grandchildren, Dakota, Austin (Ashley), Devin (Bobbie), Derik (Lily), Danielle (Nate), Chad, Kyle, Amber, Stacy, Kyle, Jayden;(2)step grandkids, Tristen and Kelly,(5) great grandchildren, Ryker Waylon, Noah, Ellie, Opal (4)brothers, Jerry (Connie), Melvin (Christine), Kenny (Darla), Terry (Betty); many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Jeanne was preceded in passing by her husbands, Don Cole Sr., Bruce Sutherland Sr.; son, Don Jr.; brothers, Jim, Jack, Randee, Fred; sisters, Linda, Roxanne and Janice.

Jeanne will be deeply missed and remembered for her childhood riddles, passion for flowers, and her amazing baked goods every Christmas. She was an amazing mother, mother-in-law, grandma, and great grandma that always made lots of memories.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
