Obituary

Mason E. Litts, 95, of Byron Center, MI, Formerly of Bedford, Hastings, and Jenison, passed away on November 9, after an accident at home. He was born February 9, 1922 at the home of his parents, Bert and Nellie (Mason) Litts in Barry Twp, Barry Co. MI. Mason attended the Kingsley one room school during elementary school and graduated from Delton Kellogg Agriculture School in 1939. On October 4, 1942, he married Jeane E. Dickerson at the home of her parents, Lyle and Velma (Armour) Dickerson in Baltimore Twp, Barry Co., MI. On November 17, 1942 Mason was inducted into the Army. He served with the 353rd Engineers and was stationed at Camp White, Oregon. In May, 1943 he was sent to the South Pacific, serving in New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Russell Islands, Philippines and Japan. He was discharged Jan. 12 1946 after 38 months of service. After returning home, Mason and Jeane bought a home in Battle Creek. He learned the carpentry trade as an apprentice working for F.J. Skidmore Construction Co. eventually earning his Journeyman's card as a cabinetmaker. In 1963, Mason began working for the Federal government in the General Services Admin. at Battle Creek Federal Center where he became the foreman of the Carpenter Shop. He retired in May, 1984. A point of great pride for Mason was the home he built with Jeane in Bedford where they raised their three children and became involved in several organizations including the School Board and Boy Scouts. He drew great joy from fishing, wood working, camping, bee keeping, and gardening. As a gardener, Mason grew vegetables, flowers, fruit trees, grapes, and his favorite, berries. Mason was a member of the American Legion Post #0484 in Hickory Corners and the Disabled American Veterans. Mason is survived by his three children, Bonnie Litts of Wyoming, MI, Richard (Landine) Litts of Alto, MI, Col. (Ret.) David (Kay) Litts of Holland, MI, six grandchildren: Erik Litts, Gina (Tim) Morey, Melinda "Mindy" Litts, LCDR (Sel) Benjamin (Alicia) Litts of the U.S. Coast Guard, Juliana Litts and D.J. Litts; five great grandchildren: Parker & Ryan Morey, Mason Litts, Madelynne & Josephine Litts Jacobson. Mason was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Jeane, his parents, brother and sister-in- law Kenneth and Frances Litts. Friends and relatives are invited to a visitation and luncheon with the family, to be held December 28, 2017 at 12:30pm. in the Ballroom (Third Floor) of the Walldorff Brewpub & Bistro, located at 105 E State St, Hastings MI.
