IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Lynn
Sullivan
May 6, 1952 – June 29, 2023
Mary Lynn (Ogren) Sullivan, age 71 of Wayland, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, June 29,
2023 in the loving care of her husband of 50 years, Daniel. She will be deeply missed by her daughter
and son-in-law, Karen and Ken Bos and her grandchildren Daphne Ann and Kenneth Sullivan (Sully).
Born in 1952 in Biloxi, Mississippi, the first of six Air Force brats that her parents, Dick and Connie, would
move from base to base for the next 20 years, Mary learned to make new friends quickly, a skill that
never left her. While her dad was stationed in Japan, she was fascinated by the seamstresses who made
custom patterns for her mom's dresses out of newspaper, and it sparked her lifetime passion for sewing
and creating custom patterns from as little as a sketch in a notebook or a cartoon image. She never
turned down a project, from horse show clothes for her granddaughter, a wedding dress for an
acquaintance to twin princess dresses for her great-nieces. She even took up quilting in the last couple
of years. Her talents were not limited to sewing, over the years she became proficient at beaded
jewelry and stained glass work.
When her senior year in Tripoli, Libya was cut short by a political coup, Mary moved to Michigan to
attend college. While living with her aunt and uncle, she agreed to a blind date with her cousin Nancy's
classmate, Dan, who became the love of her life. They married a few years later. Soon after the arrival
of their only daughter, they moved to Grant to be near Dan's mother. Mary spent the next years being
the best mom to her daughter and all her friends. She was active in the community, as a girl scout
leader, volunteering in the school and later working as an elementary librarian. During this time Mary
and Dan discovered a love of gardening with a special love for day lilies. They made many trips to
Missouri Botanical Gardens annual day lily sale to add to their ever expanding collection of unique
hybrids.
After their daughter moved out of the house, Mary and Dan found another mutual love for the happiest
place on Earth, Disney World. It became their favorite vacation destination particularly during the Food
& Wine festival at Epcot. Mary often could be found in something Disney related but it was more likely
to be a villain than a princess. Though she loved all her trips to Disney, her favorite was the last trip that
her daughter and grandkids joined them on.
Mary loved nothing more than to spend time with her grandkids. She had infinite patience to play
barbies or dinosaurs, read endless stories and go on outdoor adventures. She was always up for a swim
in the hotel pool, a day at the zoo or, her favorite, a day at Meijer Gardens.
Mary's family and friends will remember her sunny optimism, can do attitude, her superior cookie and
ginger bread house decorating skills, a love of Neil Diamond & Bob Seger, and her fierce dedication to
those she loved. She will be missed particularly by her siblings Robert (Michelle) Ogren, Terry (Alex)
Mickel, Sue (Dan) Walters, numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws (and out-laws) and her dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Constance (Royce) Ogren, her sisters, Janet
Ogren and Laura Hunter, and her niece, Amy Rose Mickel.
At Mary's request, there will be no memorial service. Donations in her name can be made to The Nature
Conservancy www.nature.org or a Cancer Charity of your choice.
