Obituary

Mary Louise (Chapman) Pion, known affectionately as Mary, passed away at the age of 84 on May 3, 2024, in Otsego, Michigan. She was born on September 12, 1939, in Kalamazoo, Michigan to August and Mary (Wright) Chapman. Her life was a beautiful testament to the love, kindness, and wisdom she embodied.

Mary graduated from Otsego High School in 1958. There she formed many life long friendships. She began her career at Gibson Guitar in the 1960s. Her time there was marked by hard work and dedication until the factory closed. Mary then channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into operating a beauty salon from her home, a venture she continued with passion until her retirement in 2001.

Mary's personal life was filled with love and companionship. She found her soulmate in Charles (Butch) Pion, whom married on March 12, 1960. Their marriage was a partnership of mutual respect and affection until his passing. Together, they raised a family, and Mary was a guiding force in the lives of her children. Though she was predeceased by her son Jeffrey Downs and her son-in-law Anthony Downs, her legacy lives on through her surviving son, Randy Pion, and daughter-in-law, Sheryl Pion. Mary's grandchildren, who brought her immense joy, will carry forward the lessons of kindness and love she instilled in them.

Mary is also survived by her brothers, several sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews, each of whom will miss her dearly. She was always ready with sage advice for her family and friends.

Mary's interests and activities reflected her zest for life and her love for her community. An avid bowler and golfer, she enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge of the games. Mary's competitive spirit was always matched by her sportsmanship and good humor. Above all, she cherished the time spent with family and friends, believing that these moments were the true treasures of life.

She faced the challenges of lung cancer and dementia with a hard fought battle.

As we say goodbye to Mary Louise Pion, her memory will be treasured, her presence sorely missed, and her impact forever felt by those who were fortunate enough to know her.

As per her wishes, Mary's life will be honored with a Celebration of Life being held on Saturday, May 18 from 1pm-4pm at Masonic Temple in Otsego, Michigan. She will be laid to rest in Otsego, Michigan where her story began and where it will gently rest.
