Obituary

April 21, 2015 Margie Lorraine (Wiersma) Van Allsburg, passed away peacefully on April 21st at Blodgett Hospital following a brief illness. She was born April 5, 1926 to Ada Mae and William R. Wiersma in Grand Rapids, MI. Margie was a graduate of Union High School in 1944. On December 19, 1945 she married her high school sweetheart, Harold John Van Allsburg. After her 3 children were older, she completed her teaching degree at Western Michigan University, and then her Masters degree in counseling. She went on to teach English at Union High School and later served as a high school guidance counselor. She is survived by her loving husband of sixty-nine years, Harold; her children Susan (Alan) Vandermeer, Cynthia (Raymond) Miller, Derk (Anne) Van Allsburg; three grandchildren; her sister Sally (Gay) VanOtteren; her brother William R. (Betty) Wiersma; and her brother-in-law Richard (Mary) Van Allsburg. According to her wishes cremation has already taken place. A memorial service has been scheduled for Friday, April 24 at 2pm in the chapel at Porter Hills Village, 3600 Fulton E. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Challenge Scholar Program at Grand Rapids Community Foundation, 185 Oakes St SW, Grand Rapids MI 49503 or Faith Hospice. The family will meet with friends and relatives from 1-2pm before the service on Friday.
