IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Manley Fitz George
Jenkins
January 5, 1946 – August 10, 2023
Manley F. Jenkins, 77 years of age, was received by his Lord and Savior on August 10, 2023, at the University of Michigan Health West Hospital. Manley was born on Jan 5, 1946, to Charles and Bernice Jenkins in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He attended school in Jamaica. Throughout his childhood, he dreamed of the "big life" and living in America. After his educational journey, he decided he would start living his dream. He migrated to the United States of America and settled in Grand Rapids during the mid-1960's. Manley worked various jobs and places, including the Dan Morgan Construction Company, the Gypsum Mine, U.S. Gibson Plastic Mine, and Acentain Concrete. However, this was not enough for Manley. Manley's greatest adventure of working came about when he worked faithfully in building his own company, Jenkins Landscape and Snowplow Services, and becoming one of the most successful black business owners in Grand Rapids. His services extended to the City of Grand Rapids, John Ball Zoo, Kent County Health Department, the State of Michigan Department of Human Services, as well as many other companies in the Grand Rapids area.
While continuing to live his dream, Manley worked his way up to receiving his United States citizenship, which was the most accrediting day of being in America. He now possessed the full rights and privileges as any other U.S. citizen. Jenkins Landscape and Snowplow Services led to many people being trained and employed with the company. Manley and his company helped all in need, which included his family and friends. He was affectionately known as "Charles Cooper" and "Jamaican Charles". He had a natural love to cook his homeland's food. His biggest joy was eating and feeding others. He loved to entertain the community, especially his Jamaican friends.
Manley left a great legacy to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by his wife, Mary Jenkins; children: William (Nicole) Green of Wisconsin, Charles Frazier of Detroit, Dave Jenkins of Pennsylvania, Ruddy Jenkins of Jamaica, and Novolet Jenkins of London, England; siblings: Nervilyn Jenkins of Grand Rapids, Hyacinth (Obebiah) Ogilvie of Grand Rapids, and Eula Duncan of Jamaica; bonus children: Terry Ferguson and Alfratz Ferguson; and sister-in-law, Delphine Jenkins of Grand Rapids; special friends: Stanley and Lillian White, Bob Smith, Marshall Howell Jr., and George and Beatrice Mayweather. He also leaves a journey of knowledge of being all you can be to his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bernice Jenkins; sister, Eutilyn Jenkins; and brothers: Aaron and Samuel Jenkins.
