Lucille Lenora Dettmann - wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on Friday, Nov. 17, 2017. She was 91, born Aug. 16, 1926, and passed away peacefully attended by loved ones. "Lu" Dettmann was the matriarch of an expanding family. She and Melvin Dettmann married on Jan. 29, 1955, and 62 years of generations followed: three children, six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dettmann hummed to music in her head, lovely notes only she could hear, including during televised Sunday church services. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, camping and her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting activities. And college basketball. Michigan State University was her beloved. Once, on a trip, she convinced her husband to stop and rent a room so she could watch the Final Four. Mrs. Dettmann was preceded in death by her parents, Dena and Peter Begthel; siblings John Begthel, Josephine (George) Zondervan, and Janet (Norman) Posthumus; brother-in-law Richard Poddig; and son-in-law Dave Dykstra. She is survived by her husband, Melvin; children Bonnie Dykstra, Mark (Lori) Dettmann and Sue (John) Schwaiger. She is also survived by grandchildren Joe (Anna) Dettmann; Jennifer (Joe) Stoepker; Rachel (Bill) Woudwyk; Martha (Kevin) Halonen; Colton and McCain Schwaiger; 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Evelyn Poddig; brother-in-law Ernest (Kathy) Dettmann; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be directed to the Michigan chapters of the ALS Association or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
