Obituary

Louis Martin (Lou) Goudzwaard, 99, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 5, 2018. He was born in Grand Rapids to Marinus and Agnes Goudzwaard on March 31, 1919. Louis graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1937, and while attending Calvin College, enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served for three years during WWII as a Radar/Communications Officer. In 1946 he married Dorothy and went on to graduate from the University of Michigan in 1949. While working for thirteen years at Lear Inc., he was recalled in the U. S. Air Force for two years during the Korean War. Upon his return, he served in the Air Force Reserves for seven years as Captain. Lou then became a personal trust officer at Old Kent Bank, a position he held as Vice-President until his official retirement in 1985. He later went on to work well into his nineties for E. S. Financial Corp. A longtime member of Hope Reformed Church, Lou chaired a committee that operated the Church of Hope, a church-sponsored multi-family furnished apartment complex for temporary use by Vietnamese refugee families. During his lifetime he enjoyed both indoor and outdoor activities with his family, relatives and friends. His personal interests included flying (he had a pilot's license), golf at Green Ridge and Egypt Valley Country Clubs, astronomy, photography and sailing. His favorite hobby was operating his amateur radio station W8UGM. He was licensed while at Calvin and his radio knowledge was helpful with his WWII duties of installing avionics electronics in warplanes overseas. At age 92 he built his own equipment and antennas to communicate with earth orbiting satellites. Louis is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy (VanAntwerp); daughters, Pamela, Patricia and Cynthia; nephews, Harmon Banning of Newark, Delaware, Martin Banning of Grand Rapids and Gregory Succop of Brooklyn, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Marguerite Banning and Florence Goudzwaard. Friends are invited to visit his family on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at Rest Haven Homes, located at 1424 Union NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505. A service celebrating his life will follow at 2:00 p.m. A private burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
