Obituary

Lois Bolt Poppen went home to her Savior. Lois (Bolt) Poppen, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2015. She was born on October 7, 1936, in Grand Rapids, daughter of Ralph and Nell Bolt. She is survived by her 3 children Jeff (Deb) Poppen, Sue Anne (Matthew) Von-Maszewski, and Mary Walldorff, and her five grandchildren Jared and Brittany Poppen, Christian Walldorff, and Audrey and Adam Von-Maszewski. She is also survived by her sister Bonnie Wagenvelt and brother Dr. R. James Bolt (Meribeth). Lois attended Oakdale Christian, Grand Rapids Christian High, Calvin College and University of Michigan. She graduated from Calvin College with a BA in Vocal Performance. She loved the Arts and especially Music and had leading roles in eight Opera Grand Rapids productions, first as Marcellina in the 1968 production of The Marriage of Figaro, Zita in Gianni Schicchi and also as Dame Quickly in Falstaff. She has had leading roles in 28 of the Calvin Alumni Players Gilbert and Sullivan productions, having played Katisha, Lady Sanqrazure, Mad Margaret, Lady Jane, Phoebe and many more. She also founded Tall Tale Travelers which was a traveling theater group from 1985 - 2000, to elementary schools. She Co-chaired Festival '74 with Buck Matthews. She has appeared with the Calvin Oratorio Society as Contralto soloist in St. John's Passion and The Parable. She also was the Witch of the Cauldron in Civic Theater's "The Little Mermaid". Lois taught voice privately for the last 45 years and 5 years at Calvin College, 15 years at Grand Rapids Community College and 22 years at Cornerstone University. She has also served on the Board of Opera Grand Rapids, St Cecilia Music Society, Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Ballet Company, Women's Symphony Committee and Opera Affiliates. A celebration of her life will be held at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church on Tuesday, November 24th at 3:00 PM, with a reception following. Visitation will be held Monday, November 23rd from 4:30-6:00, and Tuesday, November 24th from 2:00-3:00 in the Narthex. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Opera Grand Rapids or St. Cecilia Music Society.
